| Still trying to find-fix & get rid of noises on this 94 K-LT i have. Engine still has it`s knock (but runs like a champ with 74K on it), but also heard another noise. After engine warmed up i noticed a noise that seams to go away when i pull in the clutch lever & comes back when i release it. I remember someone asking me this question, but we never got into detail what will cause it. I think i have read somewhere about the clutch spring going bad & making a noise untill the lever was pulled in (i`m thinking this is right) Now Looking at the PDF file i down loaded from here, is it the #1 or #2 on page 21.9 in the clutch section. Don`t notice the noise either way when idle is up while choke ? is on, only when idleing at 1000rpm`s. |

Check the thrust release bearing, which is below the swing arm, hidden under some bellows.
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51711 Items 2 & 3 now combined.
It's a low cost minimum spanner (wrench) job compared to gearbox out.

The part to which Tim is referring is Part #5 on page 21.12 of the PDF manual you downloaded. Although not broken out in that diagram, it consists of a piston and and small ball bearing. Does the noise remind you of a worn bearing? If so, it is a good chance Tim is correct. Can you source the noise to the gearbox? Have you tried the screwdriver as a stethoscope trick? _________________ - Robert

| I see what you mean , could it be that the spring is broken inside boot ?? & letting it rattle around. I see in the instructions it says remove the exhaust & rear wheel. Thats kind of a good thing as it has the #2 pipe that goes into the collector has a crack & i`m having a mechanic at work weld it (so no biggie there) I`m going to track this down (if i have to rip it all apart) i`m going to use my flip recorder to record it so you can hear it. (this coming friday morning) |

My departed '93 RS made the same noise.
Phil Marvin was sitting next to me at one of the few New Hampshire traffic signals and asked me about it. It made the noise before AND after I had done a clutch R&R.
Scott's earplug suggestion is probably the fix. _________________ John & Cathy

| Too bad no one lives near by to have a listen. Bike not on the road or I would have the tech at BMW dealer have a listen. Funny how some say normal &some not. I had an 03 Yamaha roadstar that when warm & under load the engine would knock. Brought it back to dealer & said it was normal . Brought it to another dealer and tech said WTF & installed new engine under warrentee. So normal to some is what there used to & to others it is not (just sayin ) |

There is a clutch rumble with the bmw dry clutch.
In the K1200rs it is very pronounced and scares many folk.
There is a fix and it involves gearbox removal and a little part replaced.
In the K12rs it was so worriesome to some that the factory re configured the ecu to raise the idle and it is less noticeable then.
Some Ducatis have it too but LOUDER.
YMMV |

Well if old man winter keeps this weather warm i`m looking at putting it on the road & put the FJR away. This way i`ll save a little bit of tire wear on the Yammie, and figure out what this needs & when a little warmer if i have to rip into it then so be it. Calling Progressive tomorrow on how much to add. They lowered my payment & now no deductable. |

I'll pay more attention today when I get mine out here in a little bit.
What I heard I think I have also heard on both of mine, but I'll listen a little closer today.
I've only got one where I can get it out and start it right now. The other one is buried in the back of the garage waiting for a rotor bobin replacement project this winter. _________________ Ride safe.

FWIW compared to my earlier K1100RS that is extremely silent. And mine was after clutch swap. _________________ K1100LT -93 | ex K1100LT/SE -94 |

Here is a discussion from a good K bike forum on the sound of engine o clutch rattle noise. The comments by RFW and Voxmagna are especially worth reading....

Yes the numbers are the last 7 of the vin.
Well as far as the sound goes, I didn't hear anything noisey when cold, when hot there was a little bit in the tranny, but nothing really loud.
I think my '95 has a little louder noise to it but it also has more miles on it.
Im at 90K on the '95 and at 45K on the '97 that I had out today. _________________ Ride safe.

You have a good bike and certainly tried and proven. Robust to boot DAMHIK
The K12 which I have is essentially the same as a K11 just a few mods.
All the very best and more than a few aussies and kiwis with Ks too |

Well i noticed that the #2 header pipe was cracked at the collector, so i decided to pull the exhaust off the bike. Well after all the nuts were off the exhaust came out nice but then i heard a clunk. The #4 pipe was broken off right at the collector So i had a talk with one of the mechanics at work & asked if he could weld it up (sure no problem) So $50 bucks lighter & happy it turned out perfect, i installed it with new copper gaskets (talk about needing 5 hands to install it) Bike fired right up & wow it`s quite , but knocking is the only sound i hear now. (so i`m a little happier) with bike at idle it does it but pull in lever & it`s gone, but i do notice if i bring the idle up to 1100 RPM`s it goes away. (thats with twisting the throttle a little). Now is there a way to raise the idle up 100 RPM (from a 1000) to 1100 so the noise will go away. (or i just masking up the real problem) _________________ IBA # 47424 (yahoo)
