Quick question guys,
I WAS all done tuning up my friend's '96 K1100rs last weekend after replacing the air filter, but while the side panel was off I noticed the radiator fan looked a bit funny... Long story short the fan blades were no longer connected to the fan motor shaft! It was just spinning freely on the shaft.
Got a replacement on the way (Thanks MaxBMW!) and was wondering, is it even possible to replace the fan without completely removing the radiator? (and draining coolant). I have seen on other bikes where the rad is "hinged" at the top mounts and can be pull forward some for maintenance. Any hope?

Of course the manual just says "remove radiator"...
As always, thanks from the newb.

Did you buy a new fan for $225? Shocked

It's a good thing you caught it as the fan can end up drilling a hole in the radiator in some cases.

It MIGHT be possible but will be tricky if it is.

You can try this but it most likely won't be a piece of cake with the hoses attached:

Remove the two 8mm nuts holding the filler assembly to the frame and get that free.

Undo the bolt at the top.

Lean the radiator forward and see if you can get to the two 4 or 5mm Allen bolts at he bottom. If you can't get to those then give up and drain the system.

If you got those bolts out then remove the metal collars from each side of the top mount and get the fan top mount out of the rubber.

Assembly in the reverse of disassembly.

Coolant and distilled water are inexpensive.

Not to mention that it may be due for a change anyway. Wink

+1 on finding the problem. About 4 yrs ago, I did a two day ride from FL to WI with my 97LT. Pulled in by family near Green Bay and had a small amount of antifreeze dripping on the ground. The bad of it was the loose fan did take out the radiator. The good news was I ordered the parts, fixed myself, and it didn't happen in downtown Chicago or in Canada where I headed later!!!

Got it - Muchos Gracias!
Yup I was looking in there and had a thought I might be able to pull it off that way. First I need to get the rest of the bodywork off, which is a job in itself! Geeze there are a lot of pieces..

The owner actually ordered a new fan, I think it was closer to $275, not sure where she ordered it from.
Yes, she said the original rad DID get drilled by the fan motor. I think if she stopped crashing this bike then things would stay out of each others' way better Rolling Eyes

Went to a swap meet the other day, and a local guy had 4 3 core 85 K100 radiators for sale, I'm going to pick up at least 2 anyone else interested?

Send me a PM if you are...

Well this was a pretty easy repair.
WHY did they arrange the filler cap under the fuel tank? To top off coolant you need to remove the tank??
I bypassed that "engineering" and removed hose clamp up under there and pulled the filler hose out to the side and filled it that way.

In a properly functioning cooling system, the radiator will top itself off from the coolant reservoir when the bike cools. The only time you should need to access the cap is when changing coolant.

And if you are on an epic cross-country journey, and your bike develops a small coolant leak, you're going to have a lot of fun trying to add any coolant while trying to nurse it home!

No need to remove the tank, just remove the side panels, unclip the tank at the rear grommets lift it and slide it back a few inches.

No need to remove the side panels. Just reomve the seat, unclip the tank and pull it back to expose the filler.

So your saying that I don't have to remove my side panels and knee panels to pull the tank? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Or is this just an RS thing.

I do remember at HM1 when we pulled the tank, we left the side panels on the bike when working with Rydors cooling system problems.

The battery side covers need to be removed but not the inner knee panels/buckets. Same for RS and LT.

Steve, looking at your picture(specifically the underside of your tank) it looks like you haven't been converted to the air accumulator for your overflow vent and rain drain.
Looking at that tubing connected together you could end up with rain water down in the crankcase.(or where ever the tubing goes that was connected to that check valve.)

Further - no insulation underneath the tank???? The two hoses under your tank should not be connected. One is the breather/overflow, the other is the rain water drainline that starts on the left side of your filling lid.
