I'm heading to Arizona this Thursday - renting bikes in Phoenix and touring northern Arizona for four days. The only K bike available was the 1200LT. Since we'll mostly be on twisty roads, we opted for a R1200RT and R1200GS instead.
Does someone here have experience regarding differences in handling between the brick and the new boxers?
Thanks
Classy D.
P.S. I'll be posting video and photo upon my return... |

If the roads aren't really smooth, take the GS.
A friend has one and we did a brief ride recently- halfway through we switched and I rode his GS.
With my K, I avoid bumpy areas of the pavement. When I rode his bike I found myself heading for those rough spots because the GS just soaks them up easily. That was FUN!
He is a former K owner and did say that mine felt strong and tight. _________________ John & Cathy

Don't know about NEW boxers, But I do know when I picked up my used boxer in April the comparision between that and my 'K' was night and day. The K is much better, in MHO! _________________ 1995 K1100RS

I'm sure we all agree that (that's why we're here, after all;-)), but what are the differences? I heard there are some quirks in handling because of the boxer-specific cylinder layout... |

Dietric,
I guess I can toss in my 2 cents, since I have ridden both the R12RT and R12GS. If you are riding two up go for the RT, the seat height is lower, has a wider more comfortable seat for the pillion and the passenger is not sitting around 4 inches taller then the rider. The gearing is better for most cases on the RT. There is no comparison at all with the wind protection in favor of the RT. The RT should also have an electric windscreen, cruise control and likely heated seats, none of which is even available on the GS.
With that said I still prefer and now own a R1200GS. The bike handles great and has a few things less to go wrong then the RT as far as ownership.
Best of luck,

This all based on what I experience with my two:
The center of gravity is alot higher on the R (this is not a bad thing riding two up)/ Better wind protection on the R is better / Power and torque is pretty weak on the R/ Alot of vibration on the R, does not like low RPM's/ R is better touring for two up, better seating distribution/ The over complete handleing is smoother on the K ( Do you want to waltzs (K) or polka?(R)).
Sure there is alot more technical stuff differences which I couldn't even begin to discuss. _________________ 1995 K1100RS
