|
|
We recently replaced on an '93 K11 LT; Frt-110/80ZR18, Rear- 150/70ZR17. Rear tire fits great! Handles Superb!
We already enjoyed the Pilot Road 2's on our R1100 RT.
Both ride the delightful open roads here, along the rivers and through the mountains significantly improved.
Has anyone one put thousands of miles on this tire yet?
Any comments?

I have a pilot on the front but run a macadam on the rear as they don't make a fitment for LT rear. Second front on now and I got 14,000 out of the first. Happy motoring. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

How is the clearance for the swingarm etc at the rear. I run Macadam 50 at the moment with a 140/80 on the rear and have been looking to try some of the new Michelins for the last year or so but the Macadam is the only model available/recommended for tye K11 LT so tyre shops are reluctant to order them in. _________________ Fat Ba***d with a K1100LTse

The rear fit was the research, allright!
The manufacture's fit guide does not include rear for these years.
Same clearances as previous tires.
These replaced the Dunlop 205s Frt-110-80-18, Rear- 140-80-17. Surprisingly the same side clearance! Great tire!
The other LT has the Mac. We will change these to P/R 2s, when needed. The Pilot Road 2s are new. THe Pilot Road 1s, first release, had various problems, I am told.
If you are in the neighborhood, stop in for a tire inspection.

I put a set on this spring and have put about 5000 miles on them. The rear is a Pilot Road 2, front is a Pilot Road (front Pilot Road 2 was on back-order that week). They sure felt nice on Hwy 16 near Hungry Mother last May. I've noticed the rear is starting to flatten some in the middle, but I ride a lot of straight roads. All in all, I have no complaints. _________________ tlp

I was out on the LT's today! The with and without P/R 2s. The P/R 2s are far superior than the LT without.
Of course, most noticably in the front steering.
Even in the staight stretches I find myself enjoyably weaving in my own lane!

RJ, what colors are your bikes? I don't think I've ever seen another LT around here (except when Spokane had the rally) so I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. We do accept pictures on the site from time to time! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Hey Mistic Red,
I believe I have caught sight of you out on the highway before. We have a Caribic Blue (Metallic)(183)and Pine Green (Metallic)(683) KLT's, 3 K100RT's, 1 R1100RT.
I have spent many years at Twin Lakes, years ago.
Give me a call and we can arrange to meet!

I would have some concerns running a Pilot Road 2 size 150/17 on the LT.
First, the required Rim width is wider than the 3.00 rim size on the LT.
Second, the diameter is 1/2" smaller. I'm not sure if this would throw your speedo off or if it would just make you quicker off the line with a lower top speed... _________________ M N B

Tire Techs checked it out and approved!
We have a second LT being refitted w/ PR2s today.
Sure handles and rides great.
Keep me posted on your further investigation and we will pass on the info!

How about an update on the Pilot Road 2's.
I have a set on order then I heard there may be an issue with the radial bead not fitting the stock rim on the LT. This came from a BMW tech. I didn't know there is a difference in a bias ply vs. radial rim. I called the Michelin Man to get his take on it. Of course he was clueless.
From reading your post it sounds like you just mounted them up on the stock rims. Is that true?

From what I have seen on my LT and read, most speedo's are off by around 10% anyway. Agreed this is a step in the wrong direction but I don't think it is that big as deal. I would speculate that the slightly narrower rim would hold the sidewalls in and cause the face of the tire to grow some. It may all work out in the end.

Same stock wheels. Biased tires were on both LT'S previously! _________________ It's a Great Time to Schedule a Rental or Tour on our BMW Motorcycles!

The Pilot R2s are not rated to cope with the weight of a loaded LT, and under load/heavy riding, they will touch the swingarm..be warned!
If the bike could have safely coped with a 150 section tyre, the handbook would have said so, and this is especially important when you consider the way that radial sidewalls flex more than than crossply or bias-belted tyres, particularly during hard cornering.
Riding with an R2 on the front and a Macadam on the rear is potentially dangerous. Dunno about the states but in the UK a radial on the front front must be accompanied by a radial on the rear by law.
Radial rear with anything on the front is OK, but not the other way round. _________________

I was going to put Bridgestones on the LT with an RS rear wheel. However, I've been doing quite a bit of surfing and it looks like the Pilot Road 2s are some of the best tires out there for a good combination of performance and mileage.
Off to SW Moto Tires I go... _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Finally have the Pilot Road 2's mounted and on the bike. Took them out for a little 30 mile spin to scuff them up some. The difference is remarkable. I imagine most of it is due to new tires vs old but never the less it sure handles nice and the ride is much smoother.
No issues yet with the rear rubbing on the swingarm. It has basically the same amount of clearance as before. We will just have to see if sidewall flex is an issue for an old guy that rides like one.
I put 41PSI in the front and 43PSI in the rear just because that is what I always ran in the bias ply tires. Anyone have input in these pressures. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

I run 38/40 solo and 40/42 loaded, and get high miles from these tires. |

Maybe I should back them down a pound or two and see how they work. This is my first go 'round with radials so I don't know what to expect. _________________ 1993 K1100LT
