Not sure how to say this.. much as I love my K, I'm thinking that the time has come to sell it while it's still in good running order and probably worth more than I paid for it and get something else.
Not over keen on the K12LT - bit of an elephant IMHO and so... I fear I've changed camp and gone for a pan11A.
I'm going to miss you guys a lot - not only good company but also so much knowledge and so willing to share it. Thanks for being so tolerant and thanks for giving me the confidence to have a go at stuff myself.
Of course I haven't put it up for sale yet and have a few minor jobs to do first so the fat lady hasn't quite hit her final top 'c'.

Can I come back now and again to see how you're all doing?

Sorry to hear that you will be switching camps, BUT why not stick around with us anyway so that you'll have some great guys with which to discuss why you regret having parted with your K-bike !! Seriously though, I'm sure you'll enjoy the new ride, and all of us would like to hear about it and your travels.

Steve.
We cant be afraid to change sometimes.
The K-brick is a great machine, but there's some super bikes out there, too.
The Big Wing P1100 is a lot more complicated that the K11, specially the combined brakes and traction control. And is a lot more heavy. But is a great wheels.
And we'll not allow you to part. I'll be always part of this group.
As I said in the past:
"It's not the bike, but the people!!"

You HAVE to keep contributing here. Once a K owner- you have "married" this group 'till death (long time from now) do you part. Ask OTG!! So you can sell your brick- no matter- we hope you will continue to contribute

Of course, I am kind-of, sort-of looking to stray myself. But this is such a great bunch of wack-os, I would miss the bunch.


BTW, do the Euro-USA translation for us, what model is the Pan11A? Is that what we call the ST1100? (Honda's sport-tourer)

When I sell the K, I will of course make it a condition of sale that the new owner joins this group Very Happy
the model is one of the last 11s and has ABS / TCS, so yes, it's the ST1100 but the added 'A' refers, I believe to the extra equipment.

Heated grips etc.. picking it up in a few hours so I'll be able to report back - if it makes it the 200m home! Shocked
Actually it seems to be a few pounds lighter than a k, 635 to 638 nothing in it. Owners report comparable 0mph problems as we sometimes see on here: on and off centre stand, moving them around the garage etc etc. so I should be used to it!

Actually it is one of the bikes on my more possible list also:

Kawasaki Concours
Yamaha FJR
Honda ST
Triumph Sprint ST

less possible:
Moto Guzzi Norge (reliability?)
BMW K1300S (too far towards sport)

But I figure that you probably won't read this until late in the day- you'll most likely be out riding.

Hopefully you will send us a report- 11 vs. 1100 comparison.

Oh yes, it's absolutely brand new! Year 2000! 51k.
just got back almost 200 miles door to door, very cold indeed, very dark indeed! all in all, I'm impressed. Have to say, I'd forgotten how cossetted we are behind our electric screens - I'll need to get the taller screen, wind noise is considerable as is buffeting with the standard screen.
Very comfortable riding position, brilliant acceleration (have to say it'd leave the K standing from 60 - 90) great suspension much smoother than my K. Taking some getting used to: the Jap switch gear, the relatively skittish front end, the lower set mirrors, the very responsive cornering.

Hey nice looking Pan you got there Steve. I've owned two of them and they are great bikes - super reliable, fairly sporting for 700lbs and competent at high speeds. I also think they are still one of the better looking (and sounding) sport-touring bikes out there, and that includes the newer ST13 - ugly!

I found my K11-RS was a bit quicker in acceleration but the ST pulls like a freight train over 100 mph and has a higher, more stable top end than a K11-LT. I covered 100 miles in under an hour on two occasions on mine, once in Idaho and once in Nevada, and it was almost boring it was so smooth. But the most pleasurable aspect of both ST11's I had was the way they loaf along at 75-85 mph, instead of feeling buzzy. And 300 miles on a tank is awesome. Makes it easy to cover a lot of ground.

The only real issue I had was the non-adjustable windscreen and forward bars gave me some neck pain (same as my K-RS). You will also need earplugs for sure. Some say the Honda lacks character compared to a Euro bike, but I never did - you can decide that for yourself... Overall a great bike though - I hope you rack up many pleasurable miles on yours - she's a beauty!

Here's my 93 with a Clearview 20" in light smoke. It had the more traditional "eyebrow" vents but worked very well for me (I'm 5'10). I found on my ST's that the "quiet zone" is very small - a matter of a couple inches where you can still see over the top but do not get the wind roar. When I got it right if I stretched up fully straight I was back in the noise zone. But once you get the right one it works well unless you're out in the Great Basin in 50 kt. quartering winds - then all bets are off and you have to power through - he he....

I am also the former owner of two STs - rode STs for twelve years in all. Liked (and unfortunately totalled) them both, but was ready for a change when I bought the KRS. Comparos between the ST and K-bikes have been thrown about on this site a number of times, although I expect they are now vaporized. In short, I like the speed and nimbleness of my RS, but appreciated the smoothness, distance capabilities and reliability of the Hondas.

As far as a windshield upgrade, I'll throw out another couple possibilities:

Laminar makes a lip that attaches to the stock screen and greatly helps with the buffeting. They also make a complete windshield replacement which I had and recommend. The Laminar screen is longer (comes further back, closer to the rider) but no taller. It looked a bit odd at first, but I quickly came to prefer its appearance to the stock - it seemed to blend with the lines of the bike more. I spoke with the Laminar owner/designer and he explained that this was his intent.

My Laminar screen was the dark smoke color, which I also came to like - it helped reduce road glare but did not impair any important sight lines. If one were to purchase the smoke version, however, I recommend the clear lip. Two layers of the smoke material DOES impair one's view.

Good luck with the Pan. Very rational decision for an irrational need.*

thanks Klinker, useful and interesting info.
I have ordered a few bits and pieces (some from the US) to make the beast a little more sophisticated!
I'll update on this thread as things arrive and get fitted.

How can riding be irrational? God gave us two feet, one for each side of a bike and therefore the ability to brake and change gear.
