Not as bad a job as i thought.Yes it's a pain the amount of screws you have to take out but a couple of things i found easier than i thought it would be,getting the tank out the way,it was simple,fuel lines are way long enough to, as people have said,to place tank to the side sitting on something to the side of the bike,a chair etc
I was under the impression the filter was going to be 'in' the airbox,it isn't,it is sandwich between the two halves of the airbox and you can actually see the sides of the airfilter sandwiched between the upper and lower filter casing.Pulled up the top half of the airbox,filter pulled out easy,and the fact the filter 'sits in' the two halves of the casing it just slides and falls into place easily.
Best part of the whole job ofcourse is to stand back and bask in the glory of how clean the old filter is when you take it out!! |

You don't need to remove the tank to change the filter. |

You don't need to remove the tank to change the filter. |
Ahem,I knew that!I took the rear wheel off too to give me more clearance!I must be a distant relation to the guy that does the Haynes manuals.  |

I couldn't believe how clean mine was after 30K...I ended up using dish soap/hot water and carefully washed it out, air blasted, and put it back in... works fine. I began doing the same for vehicle air and cab filters as well...if they aren't too bad.

The only maintenance video I have seen shows the tank being lifted out of the way to get the air filter out. So, what is the easiest way to do that? I'm working my way through the 10k service, thats one of the items on my list.

You don't need to remove the tank to change the air filter. The frame gets in the way before the tank could.
The "secret" is that there is no rim on the top rear of the air filter so all you have to do to pull it out is lift the back of it and slide it out. If you have a new air filter on hand take a look at it and you'll see what I am talking about.
To put it back in easily hit the groves with some silicone spray or ArmorAll to lubricate it.
It's way oversized for a 1.1 liter engine. The factory service interval of 12K is silly. I change mine every 50K - whether they need it or not.
Doesn't hurt to take it out and blow some air though it (against the normal direction of air flow) every once in a while.

On an LT the right side lower fairing has to be removed. I believe the same on a RS.
