Hi All,
I haven't been on in a while for personal reasons and because of that haven't ridden in quite a while.
Anyway, I'm back on the bike. I was riding over the weekend and noticed fuel leaking from a hose that drains on the right side of the bike. It leaks fairly quickly and will pool up to quite a few dozen drops at a stop light.
I plan on removing the tank this weekend and look at it, but was looking for some advice on what to look for if anyone else had a similar problem.

Thanks in advance.

Did you just fill the tank?
Not uncommon if you overfill.

If your bike has the "cup" installed, there is one drain line, otherwise there are two. One drain line drains the water from around the fuel cap when it rains, the other is the overflow vent line from the tank.. As mentioned above, if you fill the tank completely (flapper removed) and the tank heats up, fuel expands and can overflow.

I only had about 3 gallons in it.
I removed the cup a while ago if you are referring to the piece under the filler cap.
I failed to mention (if it helps), I had trouble starting it about a week earlier in fact it failed to start at all. It kept turning over but never fired like no spark was getting to the plugs or fuel to the cylinders. I searched the board for these types of issues and found some good stuff, but didn't have to worry about it cause eventually it started after trying several different times over the course of a few days.. Its been starting great since.

The piece under the cap is the flapper.

The cup (air accumulator) is right under the right rear corner of the tank - where the 2 vent nipples come out of the tank.

Oh that's right, I remember the flapper now, however as I mentioned I only had about 3 gallons in it. I removed the flapper, still have it. Think I will put it back on have had more problems with it removed. Not sure yet.

I might also mention I moved to Phoenix and it has been hot even for October. But I can't believe gas would expand 2 gallons worth to the overflow line, or can it?

I had the same problem when I was out west in the heat.

There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this issue. The problem is that unused gas that is returned from the injectors is spraying out of a little nozzle on the "shed biscuit" - under the right conditions, the gas that sprays out gets picked up by the vent and comes out the drain hose. The shed biscuit is forward of the gas cap in the top of the tank.

The fix is to put a length of gasolene resistant hose on that little nipple on the shed biscuit - use a stainless screw type clamp. I forget the exact length specified in the TSB - maybe about 29 cm. I think it was actually 29.+ cm. The loose end of the hose has to lay down near the pump. This ensures that return fuel is not spraying around the tank, but is being squirted back into the gas in the tank. You need enough hose to reach all the way down by the pump - then zip tie the hose to one of the metal tubes down there.

If Julius at Gina's hadn't been such a freak about keeping people out of the shop, I'd have pictures for you

Molerat, I have 2 tsb's in pdf format I'll drop to you in an e-mail. Read them over and see if you think you want to attempt them.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all that information it looks promising, I printed it up and if I have time this weekend will give it a go. I really hope it works.
Is it a difficult procedure? It doesn't look to hard except for working in areas you can't see.

Question: Can I can skip the part of bending the fuel line and just install the new hose from the shed biscuit to the bottom of the tank, I've never had issues with running out of fuel with a lot of fuel still in the tank.

This site rocks and everyone is so helpful, and oh I changed my signature by adding my name, Brian. I may have had a case of the brown bottle flu when I created the account. Shocked

Hey Brian - I think the reason the nipple needs to be moved a bit is that you can't get a hose and clamp on it the way it's pointed now. Not sure - it's been awhile.

Update guys,
Thanks again for the info. Jim I was able to get the hose and clamp on without moving the nipple in fact it really wasn't even close. i routed the hose down toward the left back of the tank.
Not sure it's worked though, it's not as hot here as it was, if that has anything to do with it. I'll keep an eye on it and keep you updated.

Brian

Heat definitely has something to do with it - or at least it did with my problem.

The hose on mine is routed back down toward the pump, and zip tied to one of the metal lines down there.
