Noticed a leak here this morning from a "weep hole"?....

I take it this means a bad water pump seal?

Or a corroded shaft in the oil/water pump.

....which doesn't sound good. That sounds like a show-stopper. Unknown territory here for me. Are parts available? I do have a Clymer and tools.

Last time I checked the parts were available.

There's several posts around (including on IBMWR and a Brit vid on YouTube) on replacing the seals.

I replaced the seals on my LT a few years ago. Kind of a PITA but not too bad.

The reason I mention the pitted shaft is that I've seen a couple of bad ones on old K100s I've parted. My LT's was fine so my guess would be that your shaft is probably good too but it is something to check when you have things apart.

Recently had the same problem. Found that Motobins in England had what I needed at the best price.

They have a water/oil pump rebuild kit as well as new pumps.

Unsure of doing the rebuild properly, I bought a new one since I was doing a BBG and have a 50cc in September. I didn't want to find a new leak due to my incorrect rebuild.

I also did buy the rebuild kit to try on the pump I had removed.

You guys are terrific, most helpful, thanks so much!

With this drip, is there danger of water getting into the oil system?

Yes. Easy to diagnose though. Right after a ride put the bike on the center stand. If there is bubbly froth in the oil sight glass then you have water in the oil.

John, how did you find the rebuild kit to do? Think I may go that route.

Can't answer that since the old pump and the kit are sitting on my workbench, untouched.

It will probably have to wait for the cold weather to set in (you know- when Texas gets down to a frosty 60 degrees, we will be at -20 or so Laughing)

Wish I could be of more help.

John

Any reason one couldn't try using a radiator stop-leak product like Bardahl?

My guess is that it wouldn't work, if it actually is the shaft seal.
Most products like that are designed to plug a pin-hole like leak where the material around it isn't moving.......unlike a pump shaft seal.
Plus it tends to collect in the smaller waterways(and radiator pressure cap) and can(not always) sometimes actually reduce your water flow through the radiator as well, and these bikes don't have that much radiator to begin with.......

Personally I wouldn't do it, but that's just me.
You asked, I gave my opinion.

There are additives out there that swell rubber seals that might work.

However, it's still just a Band-Aid and not a real fix.

Best to do a proper repair.

I appreciate the thoughts. The bike had a over-heating problem a few months ago and am needing to get it on the road to sell it. I am not able to ride a RS like I used to. My wrists and lower back and age seem to be catching up on me.

The cooling fan now is needing replacing. I jumpered 12 volts to the fan itself to check it (it didn't come on at high heat last time). The fan motor revved up rpm for a second then did sort of a bearing squeal sound then quit. Nothing now. Sounds like it's toast. So will need to change it out. I see on a search that there's a $60 fan substitute I think I'll try unless someone here has a used one they'd like to get rid of.

The fan didn't work when I bought the bike and replaced it with a used one at that time. This was some years and 30k miles ago.

This leak from the base of the pump will not cure itself and will only get worse. Any sort of sealant including that designed to make the seal swell will also fail miserably. If the shaft is corroded which is almost certainly the reason for the leak it will destroy any sort of sealant in a very short time.

Far better to bite bullet and go for a rebuild kit or one that had already been rebuilt than leaving it to chance, K1100's get very hot very quickly even in the temperate climate of UK, so with the higher temps in places like Texas a sudden loss of coolant leading tom oil contamination as well, could lead to a very expensive seizure of the engine.

Ask your self.... which is the cheaper option? .

The shaft on my 93 LT pump was fine when I replaced the seals. Several years ago and has been fine ever since.

Thanks, Grunter.....won't be going that sealer route.
Came across a youtube that helps to see a bit what's involved although it's based on a water pump removal from a K1100LT. Will crack out the Clymer when rebuild parts come in.
