Noticed the other day while in stop and go traffic that the cooling fan would not come on. Fortunately I was able to get back up to highway speed in a few moment's time to see the engine temp drop back down to near normal range. I replaced the fan with a used one a few years ago. Certainly this fan could have failed just now.

Is there is fan relay to replace or maybe a way to check the fan for operation itself? I'm trying to remember if there's more than two wires involved with the fan to test it. Thermostat malfunction?

Other than this new cooling issue, the bike runs well.

Thanks much for any help.

Yes - there is a fan relay. The fan has only two wires.

It's been awhile since I've had the fan out - all you have to do is put 12 volts to it - if it runs, it's good.

If you can figure out which relay is for the fan, you can swap out one of the others to see if that's the problem

Thanks Jim. Will be looking into it in a few days.

Don't assume there is a problem.
When I had my RS, I noticed that the fan didn't cut in till the needle was a hairs breadth off the red.
This is quite normal apparently.

This.

You probably don't have a problem unless the overheat light in the cluster comes on.

Even then, if you can get the bike up to speed where it turns the light off then you'll be OK.

The "last line of defense" against overheating is that K bikes have a radiator cap that will "blow" (just like a car's) so until that point you are not doing harm to the engine. (If the radiator cap blows then you should definitely pull over ASAP.)

Even then, as the radiator caps age they generally blow more easily. If you're worried about overheating then I'd install a new from BMW radiator cap. It's only a $25 part.
