The plastic covering both gauges poor. I see new ones are not available and one I just saw on ebay doesn't look any better. Has anyone tried removing the gauge bezel and replacing the with new clear plastic? Thanks

I have heard of one doing that. It's been a couple of years ago.
Not sure if the write up is here or on another forum though.....

Ok here it is...

New gauges for the 1996 K1100RS are no longer available.
This works fine, but it looks bad.

So I made a lens for it.

This is the first time I've ever done anything like this.

Pulled it apart.

Got a free "drop" from Lowes.

I shaped it a dermal then 200 grit followed by 600 grit sandpaper.

Put it back together.

Because the "drop" was 1/16" thicker, it wouldn't close as tightly as I wanted, so I first ran a bead of gel-super glue around it, then nested in a this gasket, then ran another bead of gel-super glue.

All done.

This is the delaminated OEM lens.

I recently replaced my temp gage with a "like new"one from eBay. I still have the old temp gage if you want it for experimentation. If we only had someone on here who made this into a process, I know they could make money fix everyones' delaminated stuff....

I think the main problem if you split the bezel from the case will be a major problem in getting the item watertight following the work. I don't know what facilities you have commercially where you are, but there are people over here where who will be able to do the work.

I am surprised the Super Glue hasn't caused an issue with the plastic fogging permanently. Super Glue gives off fumes hours after curing and those fumes cause serious issues with fogging. (I am a serious modeler and I have lost clear parts because of this). Also Super Glue is used in crime scene investigation to lift prints off of "soft" things, like plant leaves and such. Maybe you got lucky, but I would find another adhesive.

after dripping brake fluid on my temp gauge, I found that it could be be polished back to clear again.
I started with 800 grit wet sandpaper, then 1200, then 2000. I buffed it back to transparent with polishing compound.
I did this all without removing the bezel from the gauge.
The only drawback is that the black paint was polished off the upper part of the rim of the bezel.
A little sandpaper, a little water, a bit of polishing compound and a lot of patience are all you need.

The same technique applies to scratch removal from the windshield too.

Obviously this wouldn't help with a de-laminated lens.

I purchased .080 thick plastic at Lowes for $3 and the replacement fix went well as pictured above. Thanks again.

What exactly is that plastic from Lowes? Just wondering so as not to wander the entire store looking for it. My RS fuel gauge is delaminating and needs this treatment. Thanks much.

Got it going here with a used piece of plexi from a helmet visor. Nice fit after working it a bit with a dremel tool. Excellent forum here!

The easiest solution is to replace them with brand new VDO gauges. If you search here you can find the correct part numbers but I can provide them if you're too lazy to search.
