Hi all.
I used to be a member of this forum years ago but left when I changed my K1100 for another BM - can I say what it was? Anyway I have bought another K1100LT, a 1998 Limited edition version with two tone paint work and colour coded side boxes and top box.
It had only 17000 miles recorded when I bought it last November and now has close to 26000 so it has been used. However I am thinking that I may have bought what could be described as a ticking time bomb.
The number of little niggling faults I have had to deal with, collectively outnumber the faults on the past 5 or 6 BMW's I have owned. Firstly the seat lock seized up - yes when I needed to get underneath! Then the lock to secure the radio pocket on the left side of the fairing also jammed - and yes it was locked too. (I have removed the radio - in my view a totally unnecessary piece of kit).
Then last February I was caught in a horrendous rainstorm at night and had to ride through floodwater for about 100 yards - it was above the front axle! I drove on another 30 miles and stopped for a coffee. When I came to ride away the ABS refused to re-set. On a diagnostic device they could find no fault! It was disabled by removing the relay and the bulb to stop the flashing light.
(it isn't illegal to ride in UK this way).
I had it checked again a week ago on another diagnostic device and the ECU is toast!
Then this year in Austria I had a side box stolen. Not the bike's fault I know but adds up to the number of problems. I was lucky to get another one 2nd hand in the correct colour but of course it had different locks.
Then there were the repeated hydraulic leaks from the front brake master cylinder, even after new seals were fitted. I have just replaced them yet again, but this time they seem to be holding up so far. I made sure the internal surface of the cylinder was spotless.
And then there is this intermittent misfire! It can happen at any time. It matters not if the bike is hot, cold, pulling hard or on a light throttle. It doesn't happen often but it should not happen at all. I have had it at 30mph on the flat and at 70 going down hill. I have just realised I have not noticed it happening when pulling hard going up hill.
I am systematically going though all the possibilities which I can deal with. The plugs (New about 8000 miles ago) have been removed, cleaned, re-gaped to .6mm, then replaced. The colour of the plugs was just about spot on, a light grey. The HT Lead to No 4 cylinder (not the metal shroud), had one possible cause, a badly corroded socket where it fits over the plug, this has been cleaned and refitted.
I replaced the fuel filter approx 8000 miles ago
The HT cables at the coil ends were removed, all were clean and uncorroded so they were replaced. The low tension connectors were removed cleaned off with spray solvent and replaced. So far so good, it started straight away. (a plus point!)
This morning I am going to check the side stand switch, and the connection in the wiring harness to the fuel pump on the right side.
After that if the misfire is still there I will replace the spark plugs with a known good set otherwise I'm stumped. If it was the Hall sensor I would expect the engine to die completely, Any more thoughts what the problem may be (I have considered the coils but will leave them for later)
If I had somehow managed to get water in the tank, what effect would this have if it was ingested into the fuel filter?
Like Arnie " I will be back".)
(PS I also have a 1986 K75s which has never ever let me down! So much for progress!)

I did what I said I was going to do this morning, then went out for a ride. it was for about 18 miles over a variety of roads, town, country, de-restricted, up and down hills and on the flat. So far no misfire.
I am not being too optomistic yet, that may come after I have had a much longer run and see if things return to the bad days.

Well that wouldn't have helped.
