I am trying to replace the speedo on my K1100LT and I am not sure how to hook up the new speedometer. The speed sensor on the bike doesn't seem to read on the new speedo and the cable that they gave me doesn't fit with the bike. Has anyone done anything like this?? Thanks!

I've not hear of any aftermarket unit that will read the signal from the stock speed sensor.
I have read of others installing aftermarket cluster assy's but not sure what they actually used for the speed pickup.
They most likely involve a magnetic pickup of some kind and a corresponding magnet at the rear rotor.

I know that my FuelPlus setup has a separate speed pickup that I installed on the rear drive unit that uses a small magnet stuck to the brake rotor.

BTW, Welcome to the OG forums.

+1 to what Scott said. Aftermarket gauges expect the sensor to put out at least 5V square wave. The BMW sensor outputs a 0.5V sinewave; totally incompatible. You'd have to design and build a circuit to amplify and shape the output to make it work. Easier to use the supplied sensor that came with the gauge.

Thanks guys! That is what I originally thought, but I wanted to double check before I started to mount a new sensor.

a couple tangently related thoughts...
~I saw a Ducati cafe bike a couple weeks ago that was using a bicycle computer for a speedo. That would probably be fairly accurate as you can enter exact tire diameters into the computer.
~I have considered getting rid of the instrument cluster on my K1100RS and replacing it with just a tach and a GPS - and using the very accurate GPS for a speedo. It's funny when I lead a group ride and everyone says I'm going too fast...when I'm at 75 on the GPS but their bike speedos are reading 5-10 mph faster.

I have read a couple of things about using a bike speedo and I did think about doing that. It seems a bit ridiculous, but it is a simple system and would be accurate. I also looked into GPS units, I am just not quite ready to put down that kind of money at the moment. I also thought about mounting a cell phone mount and just using a GPS speedo app on my phone! I am too worried about losing my phone going 80+ down the highway though!

For right now, I got a speed sensor mounted that works with the new speedo. I am not sure how accurate it is quite yet, as I am not on the road yet. I just figured Saturday that I need to rebuild my rear master cylinder, so I am in the process of trying to find a rebuild kit for that.

I will post a few pics when I get the chance.

I fitted a Motogadgets speedo to my K75. Once I programmed the gauge within the ballpark, I rode around with my Android phone strapped to the handlebars and running a speedometer app. I rode at various constant speeds and compared the gauge to the GPS reading. I tweaked the multiplier in the gauge configuration until the readings matched at all speeds.

Check beemer boneyard for a rebuild kit.

Also of note being a cyclist... CatEye makes several wireless speedometer that would be simple to install. The Pantone model has a programable odometer, hence you could install it an plug in the milage on your old cluster.

Just a thought, and welcome to the neighborhood...

The other day I was highway cruising to get to a friends house about 70 miles away. I crested a hill and there I see the front end of a police car sticking out. Quick glance at the speedo, 80 mph indicated. Yikes. I back off and pass him and he sits. He nailed the guy behind me. I just thanked BMW for their overly optimistic speedos.
