Hi, I'm an old rider from Melbourne Australia, Although I've often read this forum I've never posted on it until now....Never had to, I was a professional m/c tech for 55 years! Retired from that now ( moved onto aeroplanes!) But this has me puzzled.... here is my problem:-
After buying stripping and rebuilding a K1100 (now very naked and 55kgs lighter) I find that I have a very mild rattle in the 'box (tranny?) almost exclusively on overrun in 4th or downhill with light trailing throttle. It sounds like gear teeth rubbing on alloy. Never heard it under acceleration. I dropped the oil out this morning and , Lo and Behold little flakes of alloy in the oil. Certainly flakes NOT dust, not steel. I can guess what's going on. Under reverse load a shaft is moving forward and a gear is rubbing on the case. But that is only a guess , does anybody actually know what is happening? Thanks a bunch...Geoff |

Gidday Geoff,
Mate I just couldn't leave the post sit there with no replies and with you having notched up 55 years as a m/c tech you will obviously know more about the internal workings than myself, a K1100 novice but no doubt someone on here will speak up and offer some info that you will want to hear and get some help from.
BTW I am riding the Bright, Hotham, Omeo and back to Gippsland loop this weekend, my first decent ride on my K1100LT since I got it back on the road late last year after purchasing it from the rather lazy previous owner in the maintenance department..
Best of Luck _________________ Cheers Grant

| Thank for the encouragement mate. I see that I have to bite the bullet and pull the box out and have a look inside, I was a bit cautious as I feared that I might find nothing wrong. But the alloy flakes in the oil tells me that there will be a witness mark somewhere... I hope you had a great ride... I love that road over Dinner Plain and down along the Cann River... Good Luck and Thanks. Geoff |

G'day Geoff, sounds like you will find something nasty in that gearbox. Hope it's not too painfull. I'm wondering why some one who had a proper job for 55 years would move into the dogfight of australian aviation. I'm a LAME Af/Eng, E&I in the job since 68. Good luck with the fix.

| Hi Gary. Believe me after 55 years everything gets boring. I needed a challenge so closed the shop, got my RAA licence and an aeroplane. ( Jodel D11) I got so sick of riding along staring at the speedo. The noise in the box is very brief ( 1 or 2 seconds) and quite infrequent, just when you close the throttle on a downhill only in fourth .I can't make it constant however much I try. It's certainly a gear rubbing on the case. .. I'm going to leave it for a bit. .......When winter sets in I'll strip the bike and redecorate. I'm aiming to fit spoke wheels and upside down forks.. I just love to tinker............. |

Piet has an O-200 as well but rolls royce built under licence. Exactly the same as yours with rolls royce stamped on the rocker covers. 18 to 20 LPH at 65 knots indicated. It's a great thing for sundry kids to see what open cockpit flying is about. We've never had an unsatisfied customer.
