At an indicated +/- 4k rpm I'm getting an ugly sound/vibration/grinding sound from the rear left side of the engine. Only lasts momentarily. Can't maintain noise long enough to analyze the source. Any quick hints on what to look for? Doesn't seem to be an exhaust vibration.

Otherwise the bike runs good.

Bob,

Off the top of my head and looking at a few fiche on the Max site, I have a few thoughts. Of course sounds from the engine room can be deceptive- what might sound like left rear engine could be left front?

Cam shaft bearings worn (v. unlikely)

Header nuts loose.

Sidestand or centerstand- pivot worn/loose or folded up rubber rests worn.

Heat shield by the shift lever loose.

Shift lever bolt loose.

Catalytic converter "guts" loose.

Lots of other misc. parts loose- like the coil mount, foot pegs, etc.

Can you replicate by running the bike on the centerstand in neutral?

Loose exhaust header nuts as mentioned above was my problem, alternatively turn your stereo up.....

Knackered silencer (muffler) support rubbers was my problem.
Only did it when bike was vertical, stopped whilst cornering.

You all have given me some ideas. Also going to try a stethoscope Monday afternoon.

Hope it's not a cam bearing. Probably would be noisy at various rpm levels.

Screwing around town, under 4k rpm everything is fine, no noise. Run down the highway at anything above 4k no noise, and at appprox. 4k the noise comes and goes quickly. Not able to maintain it.

I had a strange noise at about that rpm and it was my clutch handle.
Go on a ride at the problematic rpm and pull on the clutch handle and see if it goes away.? Keith.

So I got out the rubber hammer and started beating around. Hitting the rear muffler bracket and heat shield rattles real similar to what I'm hearing at speed.

Clymer shows some rubber in there but I don't see any. Not sure how it could have come out, but I'm going replace it.

Hey Bob.

Te rear hanger has a rubber doughnut in there. When you buy the new one you won't believe it fits. Well with teh buck eight nine it costs.

On the front heat shield under the shifter it does indeed hve small rubber bushings the bolts go through.

ALSO!!!!!

When my 93 RS started making a little noise I found the mount from the cat converter to the trans mount was broke clean in half. That's when I put on the Remus.

Now I don't hear chit.

Serious sounding noise gone. Bought large noise cancelling ear plugs, all is good.

Just kidding of course. Replaced the rubber grommet in rear exhaust bracket, yes a tight fit, as the old one had all but disintegrated.

Ready for some trouble-free fall riding.

Note to all!

That rubber doughnut is chap, couple O bucks.

Buy a few, replace every few years. Also helps keep the vibrations in check.

Geeze Bob that bike has NOT been kind to you this last year.

Hope your weld holds up. My next project will be replacing the header gaskets. It's been awhile since the header has been off.

Last time I did mine, 4 nuts came off and the other 4 had turned into bolts because they unscrewed the studs with them.

John, I know of which you speak. I'm replacing all the nuts and ordering a couple of studs too. Pull one out during the spline lube a while back.
