Ouch, you may have a issue with that.
Check with your local license/inspection station if a welded/repaired frame would pass an inspection.
No, I haven't seen one break there. I see that it also started to rip the webbing that the seat lock is mounted to. _________________ Ride safe.

Next week we'll start to disassemble all the thing apart and study how to make a safe repair.
I'll not have problems with documentation, Scott.
The helmet lock place broke as well!!

Holy cow! I've seen my share of crashed Ks and have never seen any crack in a frame. That's pretty amazing - in a bad way.
Is that a crack in the frame member or a broken weld? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

It'd be safer to change the frame than repair it. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Good to know you're OK, Guilherme.
There's no weld there - but it's next to a weld, Drake.
That's the section of the frame that supports the rear of the seat, the tail cowl, and the side bag. Must have been a defect in the metal that took years to show up.
I'm sure Guilherme's mechanic is capable of repairing that. _________________ Jim

It broke right at the HAZ (heat affect zone). I see this type of break all the time on race cars. It can safely be repaired. What you need to do is make a clam shell to fit over the broken section. Make sure the ends of the patch are not cut square. You do not want your weld repair going right around the tube. You want the weld to make an oval shape. 30-45 degrees.

I had to replace a frame due to bent neck area, from crash. Was a real nightmare trying to re-register it. VIN is on frame. A repair should work out much better.... _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

So, K-Riders, my KLT went back from the chassis shop.
A very fine work.
Tubular reinforcements were put inside the chassis tubes and then welded.
The battery tray plate was welded too. A bick crack was found in close inspection.
Now I'll do some more necessary maintenance:
1- change the radiator fluid.
2- put a new speedometer internals.
3- put a set of new front brake rotors.
4- instal a pair of Clearwater LED auxiliary lights.

I have 10 frames in my stash - all the way from the very earliest K100 up to '93 K1100.
All are sound in that area - even though on some the rear seat hoop is badly surface corroded.
Extra heavy saddle bags / panniers and rough roads ?
A welded repair will be fine, or maybe a slip over brace [ BOTH sides !! ] first.
Good luck, and as previously - good job it didn't fail at 80 -90 mph fully loaded ! _________________ Beachcomber '93 K1100RS / '93 K1100LT and several K100's |
