I recently inherited a '97 K1100LT and occasionaly the red light (above the neutral light on the instrument cluster) will come on and stay on for a few miles and then it goes back out. Nothing else seems to happen, the bike runs great. Any ideas?
Thanks, Dave |

Hi Dave,
welcome to the forum!
That indicates a problem with the tail or brake light (sorry - can't remember which - I think it's the tail light).
FWIW, I use only Phillips bulbs made in Germany - I've tried import bulbs a few times, but the filaments in those don't seem to conduct current properly to make the circuit.
Get a couple tail and brake light bulbs from the nearest dealer, or order them online - install the new ones and keep spares on the bike.[/b] _________________ Jim

Thanks Jim,
That makes more sense now.....almost certainly the tail light as applying the brakes made no difference. Where would be a good place to order the bulb(s) from?

It happened to me just before the brake light died, I guess it was slowly dying... _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Make sure that the socket is clean when you put in a new bulb.

Dave - any dealer will stock them. Not sure if any of the aftermarket shops stock them or not. _________________ Jim

You may also find that a BMW auto dealer may have them as well, and there are a lot more of them than bike dealers.
Would be worth a phone call, but be sure to ask by lamp type or part # because as soon as you say "motorcycle" they will tell you "nope don't carry it" whether they do or not. _________________ Ride safe.

If it's the rear (tail) light make sure the replacement is 10 Watt, most car ones are 5 watt. Also check for good, clean contacts on the bulb holder. _________________ Regards Tim,
