|
|
Hi all,
I've just picked up a 1993 K1100RS in outstanding condition (how do I post a photo?) with just over 26K miles. I'm having new tires installed this week, and I'm wondering what maintenance concerns I should have.
This bike appears to have garaged its entire life. Other than the tires, nothing looks worn, frayed, or dodgy. Everything works fine. The original owner did the lastscheduled maintenance at 18K miles back in 1998, then there's nothing in the manual or further info from the guy I bought it from ($2300). My shop is going to do a general safety inspection (free) when they install the new rubber, but I have no problem paying them for a more detailed look at the bike. Other than the normal stuff (brakes, etc) what else should I have them check out that's specific to this model? Bringing it up to schedule for maintenance would be quite a bit of cash, wouldn't it?
Thanks,

Hello & congratulations !
Excellent bike in excellent price!
About pictures you can read here
http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5894
Make sure, that the workshop workers know about K1100 - it is not a regular bike, Jap bike routine can make some problems.
Maintenance - regular stuff: flush fluids (brake fluid must have), oils change, fuel filter.

SCORE!!!!!
WOW oh WOW!! You gotta post a pick.
Ida sold plasma for weeks to make a score like that.
Suspect EVERYTTHING!!!!
The brakes need to be flush every year. If th ebrake fluid looks like anything but clear water, it's time to flush.
Drain & replace the coolant as well.
Then ride it and go from there on the other stuff you are going to learn from being on this site AND now owning a BMW. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Blake,
I had a '93 K-RS until a few moments of insanity when I sold it.
As was mentioned- change out all fluids, especially brake and maybe later on- fork oil.
You might want to check for water in the bottom of the fuel tank- primarily if the bike has sat unused. The tank is aluminum and can corrode. Also the flexible ring around the fuel pump (in the tank) can deteriorate over time. Open the fuel filler and undo the 4 small phillips screws- the entire cap assembly should lift off with little effort- better access to view inside.
Also while it is on the centerstand and in neutral (engine off), rotate the rear wheel- should feel smooth with no noise other than normal brake pad rubbing.
Others will be along with other suggestions. But with minimal maintenance these bikes run for a LONG time.

Thanks for the replies folks.
OK, here she is:
Like I said, this is a remarkably clean bike. PO installed a stereo on the plate between the key and the ABS/hazard switches, and you can see the right speaker on the fairing just to the right of the roundel (new word for me! Thanks K11OG!). The radio reception sucks but it's decent with an iPod. And the Corbin's got a fold-down backrest for passengers. She will be my daily driver here in Colorado for the summer, then out to California and then all the way back to New York at the end of August when school starts up again (crosses fingers). Heat's an issue, so I'm planning on the Johnny Blanket and fan switch mods in the next couple weeks.

Definately all fluids...
check into transmission input spline lube, and driveshaft spline lube, those are the tough ones, but you will need to to so eventually. It will shift smoother with trans. input spline moly-greased.
As you will see, its best to learn how to maintenance yourself...unless money is no concern, some places probably wont even know what the trans. input spline is. Nice bike! _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

Blake,
That was the color of the '93 that I sold!
My current '92 K100RS is white, but (and don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise) Mystic Red is THE fastest color.
Hey, NICE BIKE!!
Are you going to SUNY Binghamton or ? Your major?

Thanks for the replies folks.
Just got back from the shop with new rubber and the bike really rides fine now. The shop recommends new rotors on the front brake due to wear/play on the floating mechanism, and there is an oil leak on the front engine gasket (which I didn't notice initially, but it's there). Other than that, I think she'll get me to California in August just fine.
I forgot to ask about spline lube. Is there a sticky or other info telling me how to check this?

I would question that shop's ethics and/or K-Bike knowledge.
The rotor "bobbins" need replaced if there is too much play, not the rotors. _________________ '02 - GL1800

Other than a gasket on the left for the valve cover, and on the right for the crank cover, there is no "gasket" for anything on the front. The covers are all sealed with RTV sealant. Even the bottom oil pan is sealed with RTV as well.
I've had both the timing chain cover and bottom oil pan leak, which resulted in pulling the covers off and replacing the RTV. All has been fine since.
I tend to agree with whyoldbill, and I'd question the K-bike knowledge/experience of the shop.
The front rotors are supposed to have some side to side(floating) movement by design.
If there is too much "rotational" movement then it's time to replace the bobbins as Bill said. At just only 26K miles, I can't imagine the bobbins are bad yet.
I replace them on my '95 this year(at 98K+ miles), I let them go too long.......
On my '97 they weren't too bad(at 45K miles), but I changed them anyway since I was changing them on the '95. _________________ Ride safe.
