|
|
Hey Folks,
Ever since a tire change last year, my front fender (with extension) comes loose on my K11LT and is rubbing the paint off the fairing. I was told by someone that there's a special washer for those mounting points on the forks. The washers on mine are both flat No matter how tight I cinch them up, they still slide out and rub the fairing at speed.
Any thoughts on this? Anybody aware of this issue and the washers that are supposed to be used?
Thanks!
Shawn Blair

Check under the "cap" between the forks and see if the top middle screw was re-installed. I'd bet that it is there, may be loose, but it's probably still there.
Also, there should be brackets at the brake caliper mounting bolts with Dual-lock strips to help keep the fender in place.
The fork screws with the washers don't do more than just pinch the plastic ears of the fender. If you tighten them too tight you can spit and break the plastic ears.
Depending on the age, and how many times the fender has been removed/re-installed, you may need to replace the Dual-lock strips. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi Shawn,
had the same problem with mine after the stealer worked on it. They tightened the bolts so tightly that the plastic ears were smashed. I was hours from home - and already had paint damage. Went to the nearest hardware store, got four outside lock washers - star washers - put one on each side of the plastic ears, snugged them down, and they held for many tens of thousands of miles. _________________ Jim

Same thing happened to me on a trip to Key West. The paint was rubbed off by the time I discovered it. I used some star washers and have had no problem since. _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

Scott, thanks for the heads up. At first I had no clue what you were talking about, even after looking up 'locking strips'. Then, while putting the star washers on, I found the strips and realized what you were saying. It had been a while since I actually pulled that fender off myself. I knew they were there, once upon a time, but spaced on it. Both strips were 'stripped' and useless.
SC & Jim, thanks for the recommendations. I added the outside star washers and the fender held, at least for the trip home. I'll add the locking strips and I think that will permanently take care of that problem. Except for the $$ paint rubbed off the fairing. Damn dealer mechanic..
Thanks all! _________________ Shawn Blair

Apologies about the very late addittion . . . but I thought I'd show you what I did when I was faced with the same problem.
Adding a Fender Extender only made the problem worse, so having fretted for some considerable time over the front guard flapping in the breeze I came up with this :
It doesn't look too bad and is un-noticeable by most other riders, the cable ties are sacrificial so any time the fender has to come off they are replaced. You can even loose the clip by threading it through from the back, but I find that stupidly fiddly.
The overall look isn't too bad . . I thought . .

Step 1: Drill hole through fender and caliper bracket.
Step 2: Install M5 stainless steel buttonhead w/ Nylock nut.
