Gidday Fellas,
Yep, new to this site and also the "K" model beemers, a 1993 K1100LT of which I purchased just last Friday.
I have had bikes off and on over my 46 years and also a lovely 1981 R100rs for a good few years which I sold only two years ago, during these last two years I restored my dear fathers 1928 Chevrolet tourer which consumed many hours of my weekend spare time and yes I have a fantastic understanding wife and family.
Here is my Chevy blog link below if your are interested
http://montythe1928chevrolet.blogspot.com.au/
Anyway my new bike was purchased purely because I started to miss riding again after the car resto, and also I love to service, maintain and generally just tinker about with my bikes in my shed as well, I am no mechanic but I replaced the leaking rear main seal in old R100rs after I read up about the procedure so I will give anything a go.
My new bike has 152,000kms on the clock, the motor is super smooth and quiet, but I brought it cheap as the owner gave up with a few electrical issues and wanted out of it.
The main issue is the speedo, of which I have read up about on here over the last few days, the tacho works, the abs lights and everything work but no speedo action, any further help here would be great??
So today I started to pull down the fairing, I found loose and missing screws which I now been replaced, I found bad wiring connections which have also been fixed, and I also found what looks like a long earth wire cable? it is attached to the bold up near the steering head under the tank but the other end was just hanging down in the engine and looks like it has been like this for quite sometime..
Yes I need a service manual soon and will get one, but where does the other end of this cable bolt to?, can anyone help me here please? as I downloaded the manual but cannot find it anywhere in the pdf manual.
So I hope I am welcomed here with my near "K" ride, I still have a great group of mates over on the boxerworks forum and would love to continue that here also.
Anyway, any info would be great, point me in the right direction and I will have this biking running and looking like new a couple of months.
I am located in the lower part of Victoria Australia....
Cheers

Hi Grant,
Welcome to K11! Mostly good bunch of guys here - watch out for Drikko, though.
Can't answer your wire question - I'm sure some one will.
Thanks for the link to the Chevy pages. _________________ Jim

Hi Grant,
Welcome to the family.
Your "Monty" blog is some fascinating reading. Your father would be very proud of you.
That really sounds like a great way to remember your dad.
As far as your wire question, if it's the braided stainless steel wire you're referring to, it simply connects the fairing and the frame/engine. My guess is to provide a definite "earth" connection for the frame, rather than relying on painted metal parts, either that or it's a safety wire to keep the fairing from hitting the ground when all of the bolts rattle loose
As far as the speedo not working, that is possibly a crappy connection on the back of the instrument cluster. It could also be the "hall effect" speedo sensor(the black wire and connector plugged into the top of the differential.
Good luck. _________________ '02 - GL1800

Gidday Fellas,
Many thanks for the nice words about my new bike, the chev blog and also in regards to the tech info I was after, much appreciated indeed.
Yep thought is was an earth wire of some sort (yes the flat braided one) but just not to sure about where it went, so I will find a good location on the fairing/frame tonight and get that sorted and ticked off the list.
Well its Monday morning over here in Oz, so you all enjoy your Sunday over there.

Hi Grant,
There's a handfull of aussies here, Andrew (Pegasus) and Cerebral Kneivel up here in QLD, Keith somewhere in Nth NSW and a loony (ausbrick) in Melbourne who likes hacking his K11 around, I'm sure he'll pop up soon
Can't answer your question about the rogue wire, but as said before the weak point in the speedo is the connector on the back of the speedo and the pickup, but first question is the odo, is it working? If the odo is working then the pickup and connector is fine and the the problem is inside the speedo itself. The speedo and odo both work off the same pickup of course.
I'm going to have another go at getting down to the GP this year so will try and catch up then. The last attempt ended in disaster.....

Welcome Grant.
When I bought a radio kit for my '97 a few years ago, it came from the UK market, anyway the radio antenna mounting base had a long flat stainless braided ground lead with it. You might look in that area for a connection point.
YMMV. _________________ Ride safe.

Gidday Fellas,
Again thanks for the info, radio earth sounds interesting, something to look into.
And Drikko - flipped, thrown and slapped down hard by a wee small electric bike, beer goggles a little tight and fogged up that day I gather??, to easy to do that and I hope the leg is back to being in a good usable condition, good write up about it to btw.

Gidday Fellas
So today I got the local on site auto electrician to swing by my house and give my K the once over with his professional testing gizmo's, he checked this and that as I wanted to be pointed in the right direction first and also make sure I was not barking up the wrong tree with my faulty speedo fact finding mission that lay ahead of me over this coming easter..
I have power to both front and rear abs sensors as these were both undone when I collected to bike last week, so thats good to know.
I also have power to the rear speedo sensor.
My trickle charge socket on the left side now works, again a loose wire and also I thought that my 240v charge was playing up last weekend, not to be and all good to go.
All my fuses and dash pad switches are all correct and working fine.
So now I can start with removing the speedo housing and give the connections all s good clean up...
Anyway I am chipping away at it slowly as I have not much good with the electrical side of things but can see myself learning rather quickly with this bike... _________________ Cheers Grant
