I purchased my K1100LT new in 1996 and it now has 154,000 miles. Over the last couple of years, my K1100LT has suffered from intermittent cutting out. In the past, the problem was cracked exhaust at the 4 into 1 or an exhaust gasket leak at the head, causing the 02 sensor to give a false signal. After several welds and a second exhaust, I switched to a REMUS two piece exhaust system. I then started having the same problem caused by cracked vacuum hoses and sealing to the injection rail. So, all the rubber hoses were replaced. It ran great all summer.

Now it acting up again. This summer, while in the middle of the Colorado Rockies, my GS fried the halls sensor. Three summers back, my RT fried it’s halls sensor on the north shore of Lake Superior. Each time, it was an intermittent cutting out. It would run great for several weeks and then start cutting out for no reason. For each bike, I went through the usual cleaning of all the connectors, draining the fuel tank and changing the fuel filter, fuel injector cleaner, lose wires, check battery, changed the sending unit in the gas tank, etc. Usually to no avail. At the most inopportune time, the hall sensor fries (usually during the rare moment when my wife is travelling as a passenger). She never seems to be amused.

So my question is has anyone else experience a halls sensor failure on a K1100LT? I’ve always thought this was an oilhead issue due to higher air cooled engine heat drying out the wiring. This bike is no spring chicken; none of them are anymore. Replacing seems to be simple enough. The price for the Bosch halls sensor on BMW Eurosport is about $350. Cheaper than the highly overpriced BMW sensor at $500. Still overpriced.

I still plan on taking another look at the side stand sensor, fuel tank connection and motronic connection. But I’m leaning toward just replacing this sensor due to its age. I don’t plan on selling this bike and who knows how long these parts will be available. Thoughts?

Ken,

Have you warmed the bike up then tried the HE hairdryer test?

No. Can you explain how to do this test?

Remove the Hall Effect Sensor cover (front of engine, right side)

Might want to run the engine up to normal operating temps.

With the engine running, take a high heat hairdryer or heat gun and aim it at the sensor.

If the HE Sensor is faulty, this should duplicate the problem.

Good luck.

I removed the plastic and removed the Hall Effects Sensor cover. I warmed the bike up until the fan came on and then put my heat gun on the sensor. It worked....the bike started cutting out. Looks like a simple remove and replace.

I called the head mechanic at my BMW dealer and he told me that using a heat gun on the halls is the test they use on their triumphs. For the BMWs, they use an ohms test using their specialty BMW diagnostics equipment. Either way, he confirmed your method and the test results.

Thanks for the great tip.

It is a "usual" problem, heat dependant so often you can restart the bike after 10 minutes but it'll only get worse. if you ignore it

You can also test it in static mode, here is how, you need a 12V (or less, 9V is fine) power supply, here red is +12, black is ground.

If you set the plug like in the picture (lone pin at bottom), plug ground on the top left pin and +12V on the top right pin. Then the + side of the voltmeter to +12V and the - side at the output of one of the sensors, one of the free pins except the lone bottom one.

As is, I have 14.06V and with a small spoon between the sensor and magnet it drops to 0V, the sensor is OK.
The other sensor, again 14.05V

The spoon drops again the signal to 0 (slightly oscillating to 0.02V) the other sensor is OK too.

You can then heat it and check again.

If you are intested you can buy the sensors as electronic parts and replace them, I have some spare ones just in case but never needed them yet.

I purchased a new Bosch halls effects sensor from Euro Motoelectrics out of Denver yesterday http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/ and should have it in a couple days.

Since I have three older BMW that have all had halls sensor issues and I don't plan on selling any of them, I am interested in the knowing where I can purchase the parts to repair them. Please provide.

Hello!

Try to go follow this
http://www.ebbo.org/2av54.php.
The sensor it self is general purpose part, so finding the manufacture and reference number should be enough.

Best regards,

Thanks for all the help. I paid $360 for a new Bosch unit. I will repair the old halls sensor just to have on the shelf.
