For the last few months Jen -our daughter- some of you have met her at HM IV and V- has had this off-road bike bug.

Must be a combination of her love of MC riding and her mountain biking skills. (BTW, I have not posted this here before, but 3 years ago she was a national champion in mountain biking)

Anyway, tomorrow she is showing up here with a Honda CRF230F dirt bike to rip up our private road and woods.

Now she is emailing me craigslist and ebay listings of dirt bike/dual purpose bikes for me so that I can ride in the woods with her.

I have enlisted OTG for his knowledge on the subject.

Great............if I survive riding a road bike with all the texting teenagers- the woods will finish me off

I hear you!! A number of my riding mates have bought Suzi DR650s as they seem to be tough and cheap, they are pressuring me to do the same. Mind you we have lots of interesting places to go riding here so it is tempting. Will look at it when I can walk/ride again which won't be till next year I suspect!

Good to here your daughter wants to try differant M/C riding lots of fun to be had in this area.
if u do ever get to this side it will add lots of more roads to go on so don,t be shy to try Im sure your mounting biking will help heeps.
Pauls doing a 3 day play over the new year with his BMW R80g/s at our army base in the centre of the North Island and if he can do this type of riding then U can, I also play on the gravel roads with my R80G/S

John, whatever you do, make sure you get ATGATT for off road even. I thought I'd post this instructive video on how to suit up for dual sport riding. I hope it is educational, it has some good pointers:-

I'm still able to ride yet here.
Temps are running between -7 deg C in the morning to +7 deg C in the afternoon.
I won't get the bike out if it's any colder.

Maybe you should read all the "How my KTM fucked up in the middle of nowhere" threads on ADVrider....

Save yourself some money and get an introductory bike, the Suzi DR650 is a bargain and totally reliable!

I agree with drikko,start on the cheaper bikes like DRZ400, dr650 etc good bikes with plenty of parts to fix.

I am looking for "dual purpose"

Of course the new Honda CRF250L is looking pretty good- at less than 1/2 the price of a KTM........

The DR650 is VERY much dual purpose. It cruises on 130-140k (80-90mph in old speak) all day on bitumen then does dirt like a trailie. A mate of mine here in OZ just finished a 5000ks odyssey on one about half of which was dirt roads and even across deserts. Never laid a spanner on it. He was glad he left his R1200GS at home as it just wouldn't have handled the dirt as easily and the DR is great on the bitumen. A very light bike. I've ridden it on trails myself with no problems and I'm a beginner too.

My biggest concern with a big displacement DP bike is how tight our woods are.

I am looking to use the road part of DP to get to trails. I don't expect to do any sort of traveling- multiday- with it.

I would get an off-road only bike but then I will have to trailer it to get to any trails. I was thinking that I am giving up a little off-road ability with the slight weight increase due to the required legal lighting, etc.. but that is OK. I don't expect to be at 100% in the woods- I'm not racing.

That is why I thought the 250-350 range is good. I don't want to be controlling a big monster in the woods. Maybe might even look at a DRZ400?
