Hi All! New to the forum and to K11's. Thanks for indulging me here.
I have a couple of (probably dumb) questions that I don't see answers for in a quick search in the forums.
- Is the speedo on the RS's known to be 'off' a little? It seems to be showing a couple of mph faster than I am actually travelling. Kinda verified with the odometer on a known distance. I calc about 6% too fast.
- There are 2 screw holes in the rear fender. They look like the perfect place for a reflector or something. Is there an accessory that fits these holes? Also, does anyone know the thread size of the holes?
- My third question was going to be on coolant, but I looked here and I think I'm safe with what the local guys have, the dealer's a fur piece down the road.
Thanks! _________________ 1996 K1100RS |

Most speedos read about that much faster than the real speed. Use a GPS to see exactly how far out it is. Mine is more like 10% out, both my cars are about 5 - 10% optimistic. Probably trying to not have you sue them for getting tickets I guess. _________________ K1100RS '97

Welcome to the forum.
No such thing as a dumb question.

Most all the speedo's are "off" a bit.

I have some small reflectors mounted on one of mine.

You don't have to use BMW branded coolant, but just be sure that what ever you do consider is safe for aluminum engines. As most motors in cars today have aluminum in them, most any auto coolant should be good. Just check the label to be sure. _________________ Ride safe.

My speedo reads approx 10% fast according to my Garmin Zumo
The two holes are for the full length extension to the rear fender which many people remove. It's made detachable to aid rear wheel removal, and without it the bike looks a little more sporty, and throws up more spray. _________________ There is only now, yesterday is gone and is unchangeable, tomorrow is uncertain. You did hit on a point I overlooked.
There should be 4 holes. 2 horizontal for the fender extender as DL mentioned, and then there are 2 vertical just under where the registration plate mounts. These are the ones I have the reflectors mounted in. _________________ Ride safe.

I used the method described in the link below to recalibrate my K1100RS speedometer. I couldn't get the soldering iron trick to work but I just adjusted the potentiometer as described and checked the results against my GPS. It worked perfectly.

Ah yes, the vertical holes are not visible over here in Europe as our licence plates are big enough to cover them up, and many people bolt through to secure their plate to the fender.

Thanks for the info, glad to know I'm not imagining the uncalibrated speedo. _________________ 1996 K1100RS |

I have my Zumo (gps) positioned over the speedometer for a couple reasons.
It is a much more accurate speedo plus since my K-RS was originally a Canadian bike, the speedometer only shows kph, no mph. _________________ John & Cathy
