Hi All
I am considering putting my 93 RS on a diet over the winter and am after any advice from those that have gone before me.
My initial thoughts are to dump the ABS system, and fit a Remus exhaust which I figure should lose around 50 lbs. Then we are into the more marginal gains/losses. So in an effort to further reduce unsprung weight, has anyone tried alternative brake callipers and wave discs? Ti wheel spindle and various bolts?
The ABS is working fine by the way, not that I've ever used it in anger. But I think the lines are original and so Mr Goodrich will be paid a visit via Motorworks.

You (the bike that is...) could lose some more weight with one of the new batteries (Shorai?) but expensive.
You could just start removing non-essential items. Interior fairing trim pieces, the centerstand, lower fairing. Is your tail/tool storage jammed with lots of "just in case" stuff?
As far as removing a functioning ABS system? Only you should determine that.
Biggest problem (no pun intended) is that K100/K1100 bikes are overbuilt, understressed with an eye on longevity not light weight.
Good luck. _________________ John & Cathy

Exhaust, ABS is where to start i think...I've seen some 'cafe-d' naked k bikes with different footpeg arrangements, those big side plates and tray must have some weight. Calipers and rotors will get pricey i'd bet. A racing version without non-essential wiring, etc. if you could find a photo could give more ideas?...IF there was such a thing. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

Interesting piece of work, but a bit further than I intend to go
My plan is to keep it's sport touring capability, whilst losing some overall bulk and especially unsprung weight at the front to speed up the front fork reaction.
I love my RS, and just want to sharpen things up a bit. It fits like a glove, it's practical, fun, and in the real world it's as fast as it needs to be. I've had faster (K1200GT 06), and for me it didn't work the same way as an overall package. _________________ There is only now, yesterday is gone and is unchangeable, tomorrow is uncertain. Hello!
What I like about that design is the way that battery, ECU and FI parts are arranged on top of the engine. Also foot rest are minimal.
Thinking about K11 foot pegs the fact that they hold pannier mounting backed must be considered. On the back side of foot peg some strengthening ribs can be seen. I think, that all metal inside those reinforcements can be milled out, with keeping proper cut radius in the corners.

Good morning all...
Looking at the "minimized K" pic that Rafal posted, how does that bike sit up so much straighter on it's side-stand than does mine ( wicked lean angle ) using what appears to be the same stand ??? I know we have discussed this before, BUT I still get the "willies" every time I have to use the side-stand on my K1100LT, and I have yet to uncover an answer that seems suitable. Any ideas ?? Are all side-stands the same ??
Best regards all,,, ride safe ! ...........// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Looks like the fork bridges been dropped about 40 mm at the stanchions.
Could be that a bit shorter shock is used too. |
