Okay, for a variety of reasons, I hadn't ridden for about 2-3 weeks. The other day, I got the wash gear out and cleaned her up in preparation for a ride on a nice cool day.
I turned the ignition on, and all the lights came on as usual, but I didn't hear (what I think is) the fuel pump cycle, as it should. I pushed the start button, and . . . nothing. Ignition off . . . back on . . . pushed the button again, and still nothing. So, I put it in 2nd gear, pulled the clutch in, and rolled it a few feet, (ignition off, of course!) then let the clutch out, bumping the engine over just alittle. After that, everything returned to normal. The bike started at the push of the button, and all was well.
My question . . . what could have caused the glitch? _________________ Scot

Sounds like it`s about time to remove and dismantle the starter.
You need to clean the starter internals for carbon dust from the brushes,
pay especially attention to the commutator.
It can also be caused by worn carbon brushes, so it`s a good idea to have those ones at hand also, before dismantling.
This is based on that bumbing the engine did make a difference, your fuel pump should still have started tho.
What would affect the fuel pump, is the sidestand switch.
Two fault appearing at the same moment, not that likely..........was the sidestand down at the first starting attempt?

Ya know, Inge . . . that's a damn good question! I know it was on the center stand when I washed it, but I'll usually deploy the side stand when I get to that area, so I can clean the area well. I just don't remember, but it's very possible I left the side stand down and didn't realize it.

Since you`re in doubt about the sidestand position......some good news.......forget the starter cleaning.
Some research in the wiring diagrams shows that on later MA 2.2 equipped bikes the sidestand switch disables both the Motronic relay and the starter relay.
Your problem have disappeared.............you remember the sidestand switch function after this . |

If it happens again, check the gear indicator, may be showing odd digits.
Tis common for a pressure washer to upset the gear indicator sender. So if it doesn't show 0, it won't start unless the clutch is pulled in.
I do however, tend to agree with the sidestand switch being most likely. _________________ Regards Tim,
