My 96 K1100rs was stolen then found. I have only had a short look at it before it went to the salvage yard. It looks like the theives ripped the dash panel off to get to the ignition wires. They then twisted the wires together. The bike did not appear to have been started of even layed down. Other than the above damage the mirror was knocked off but the leash kept it near by.
My question is should I buy the bike back from the insurance company, or take the money and run? I have only made one payment on it but won't be able to get another loan till all this is settled.
Could the computers have been damaged from the wires being crossed?

When you say dash panel do you mean:- Speedo or Crash pad across the handlebars or anywhere else?
If it's the "crash pad" that holds the 4 switches with the key in the middle, then IMHO no electrical damage as I don't think there's any power there with the key off.
Was the steering lock on? If not there would have been power to the dash light & radio if fitted. If the purple wire from that light had been connected to the ABS switch wires that could be FUBARed, but again IMHO most unlikely.
If the deal is favourable & it was mine I would have it back. Consider also it's "parted out" value if unsuccesful.

The crash pad was ripped off but non of those wires were tampered with. Only the wires from the ignition switch were crossed in an attempt to hot wire it.

Good, then there are 4 wires:-
Live,
Radio & Dash lamp,
Switched live via kill switch to ECU (very loosely for the pedants)
Parking lights.
Only possible electrical damage is NBG battery if still connected when you collect the salvage or (most likely) a blown fuse if live touched ground.
Possibly some rewiring to restore the paths to the switch & gorilla damage to the switch itself.

Is the switch connected to the harness directly or is there a connector? I would like to replace the switch.

Item 3 Part # 61 32 2 305 292 $106 Ouch.

Bit of a bitch to do, lock bolts need drilling. If like K1100LT, the top plate holding the forks has to be removed to allow removal.

It looks like I can just get a lock core and wiring pigtail. Cool.

Well, the bike finally made its way to the BMW dealer. 3 weeks after it was recovered. The dealer says the wiring harness under the tank is charred and the computer is most likey fried. They quote over $3k in damages on a $3500 bike. I paid $4k for it a month ago. Looks like I'm out $1,000 after deductible.
It was fun while it lasted.
