First the speedometer, odometer and trip meter all working correctly. It is just the tripmeter reset knob that isn’t working. It just spins freely without turning any of the dials. I figure that something internal is broken on the reset. Has anyone ever had this apart? Are there any pictures? If the gauge cluster is difficult/time consuming to dismantle I may just leave it as is because I do track my mileage so I can look back if I forget when I filled up last, a pain but survivable. Plus I question once I get it apart whether I would be able to replace whatever is broken. I looked at a parts break out at http://www.chicagomotorrad.com/bmwbikes.epc, but it doesn't really show what the knob is attached to. I tried a search but came up empty, if you know of a thread a link would be awesome.

Smee,

I cant help you with the rebuild.

However, your bike does have a crappy fuel gauge that can be a rough guide. Also once you are down to ~20miles of range you will hear a loud whine from the fuel pump so that can serve as your "fuel up now" signal till you get the speedo fixed.

I don't have much faith in that wobbly fuel gauge but it does "work" and I use it as a loose guide. I trust mileage calculations much more plus then i know in how many miles i need to plan to stop.

Inside that knob connects to a shaft having a slot in it. If the mating key (or lug) was not in line when inserted it probably broke the shaft to the odometer. Very tiny parts and probably frail. ( Sorry to have to say )

My gas gauge is very reliable, even after I replaced the sender unit.

The other day I reset the tripometer without thinking during mid tank. So, I watched the gauge as I rode out the last half tank and sure enough right about the time the gauge hit the red area, the low fuel light came on.

A few miles later and $12 worth of fuel and she was filled back up.

I usually do use the tripometer and use the gauge as a reminder, but it is nice to know it does work pretty well....(on mine at least).

Had the same problem recently. Failed plastic gear. Sent the cluster assembly to an instrument repair shop in Brisbane after looking at the problem and deciding it wasn't worth the hassle of doing myself. The shop told me it's a difficult fix and no warranty on it. "all old plastic bits in there" Works fine ever since and cost about AUD$150.

From the way it sounds my suspicions were correct, more trouble or money than it is worth. Or at least in my opinion right now. I will just get used to doing without the tripmeter.
