|
|
Greetings, I need to replace my 94 K bike battery. The manual says to insulate the ground before I do anythin. I'm confused by that because you need to remove the control unit from the top of the battery to insulate the ground which I assume to mean disconnect the ground from the battery. So, I'm thinking that I unclip the big wire plug thing into the control unit, then ubolt the control unit and then remove the battery. Does this sound correct? My other option is to totally wimp out and take it into the BMW dealer and have them do it.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, just disconnect as you describe. Take off the negative connection first when taking the battery off - reverse when connecting the new battery i.e connect positive first. _________________ 1980 CB900FA

Thanks for the information. I have visions of doing it wrong and having my simple battery replacement project turn into something much more expensive. The sequence looks pretty simple so it seems like there is minimal opportunity for me to mess it up. Thanks again for the advice.

When they say "insulate" the ground, I think they just mean don't let it flop around and possibly touch back up againt the negative battery post while your removing the positive cable.
It does tend to want to return to the post just from memory of it's bend.
I've always removed the "brain" first and then the disconnected the negative battery terminal. _________________ Steve

Greetings -
Success!! The battery has been successfully changed and I didn't blow anything up or burn down the garage. And the bike even started after the event! Now the snow/rain/wind/flooding needs to go away so I can do some riding. Thanks all for the help. _________________ Always ride SAFE!!

Don't bet yer last nickel on that!
Read what I did while installing a new battery:

My new battery ended up costing me over $500!
Pay particular attention to how close the battery hold down is to the positive terminal on the battery. _________________ Scot
