Was following my K11 for most of the day just to see if and when it blew any smoke and yes it does.
1. After it had been on the side stand for a while it blows blue smoke for a few seconds and
2. After we have been going down a hill for some time with no throttle ie engine is braking, then open the throttle up a bit, and for a few seconds blue smoke again. The rest of the time it's as clean as a whistle.
Someone suggested valve guides and or valve guide seals. Any one know what it could be?
I'm using 20W50 (it's hot here!) dino oil, engine has about 57k kms on it and is running wonderfully after doing a throttle balance.
Any ideas? _________________ K1100RS '97

Valve guide would be my amateur guess. On downhill/no throttle you are creating maximum cylinder vacuum and oil is being sucked past one or more valve guides.
Others have followed me and both my former K1100 and current K100 would occasionall do the blue smoke act.
Can't answer on the sidestand- rarely use it. _________________ John & Cathy

| Sugar hill is correct on valve guide, also while bike is on side stand oil will go to the head & leak past old hard seal & past valve guides . I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to smoke worse. If it would make you feel better, install new valve seals & see if it helped any. If it still continued, then pull the head & get new guides & valve job. |

In a nutshell .................... oil smoke on overrun = worn seals / guides / both. Unless exceedingly high miles, I'd think seals.
Smoke on acceleration / under load = worn / broken rings and or bore wear.
Both above ROT but guided me for the past 50 years !
Again as advised, Kays collect oil in top end and when placed on side stand - doesn't drain back, just waits for that embarrassing start up with all your pals looking on !
A pal of mine was so fed up with this that he put a sidestand on the other side of the bike !!!!!!!! _________________ Beachcomber '93 K1100RS / '93 K1100LT and several K100's |
