I was researchering changing the fork seals onmy K1100LT and came across this tool to repair the fork seal rather than replace. the theory makes sense . Has anyone on here tried it.
product is called "SEAL MATE" _________________ A perfect day is Anyday Spent on your Motorcycle.

Certainly worth a try.
Are the seals original? If they are, it's probably time to replace them. Slap some gaiters on, and you're good to go.

A small thickness feeler gauge will do the same to clear out any little debris that is sitting in the seal. _________________ David, owner of:

Thanks Guys. the bike has 90000 + km . I purchased the K1100 with 80000 km on it had there is no service history , but I doubt if they are original.
I was thinking the seal mate must be more that just a cleaner. maybe it is a bit abrassive to resurface the seal.
Regardless I am going to try to find the SEAL MATE| locally and give it a try.
I will post the results. _________________ A perfect day is Anyday Spent on your Motorcycle.

It does not resurface the seal - it just pulls any grit off the face of the seal.
As posted above, a thin feeler gauge will do the same thing. _________________ Jim

Hi "skeezer"...
Re: ""maybe it is a bit abrassive to resurface the seal.""
Sorry... BUT you cannot resurface an oil seal !! Period ! In your case, why not just "go with the flow" and learn how to replace these seals on your own. IF the seal is truly worn, and its not just a 'foreign particle' causing it to weep, the Seal Mate will not help. In fact, if the elastomer is soft and swollen due to age or permeation from old fork oil, you could/will end up doing more damage with a Seal Mate or metal feeler gauge than you would like, leading to replacement in any case.

I have done seal replacement's before on different bikes and I do have the BMW service manual for my K1100LT. I was resigned to do the Fork Seals this winter but was curious about this product and I would like to try it to see if the Seal Mate actually would work for some weaping seals.

I guess all it'll cost you is the $8 ish but frankly I laughed listening to their video, I don't believe for an instant that they've 'fixed' 90 odd percent of leaking seal probs with this. If your dust seals are good and last replacement made sure the stanchion was spotlessly clean foreign particles shouldn't be getting in there anyway.
Also, $350 and several days downtime in the shop, just where the hell is he taking his bikes for fork seal repair, I want to open a seal repair shop there too, damn, I could retire in a year. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed or numbered! |

Get BMW seals, the cheaper ebay ones are too thick to fit under the snap ring--although i wondered if the force required to seat them and not using the ring--would be enough to hold them. It was some trouble to get to the fork seals, time and labor add up. Definatly protect when done with gaiters, etc. you dont want to do this often. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

This feed back is Great. I have priced the BMW seals locally , and also checked with Anderwerks ( Local used BMW shop) it sounds like it could be around the $300 mark to replace both . So I have the time and a Nice heated shop , tools . and as I mentioned earlier I have done fork seals in the past. ( not my favorite project) but confident I will get it done correctly. _________________ A perfect day is Anyday Spent on your Motorcycle.

Put on the fork boots too.
The seals are a bit of a weak point IMHO. Keeping the water & dirt off them will help them last a lot longer.
I ride in all kinds of weather. The fork books have made a world of differance. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!
