Today I joined the second group of K1100 owners; You know, those that haven't dropped their K and those who have?
Arriving home today after work, I unloaded my passenger and proceeded to put the bike on the center stand on my PAVED driveway when it felt all mushy and promptly fell on its side, nearly crushing my passengers foot in the process.
After the appropriate exchange of pleasantries and ensuring my passenger wasn't mortally wounded, I got the bike up and onto the side stand to investigate what happened.
Imagine my surprise to find that the lever side of the stand had broken off completely about 3 inches up from the foot pad. The tubing was completely torn up and closer investigation showed a triangular opening (rusty) through the tube on the upper side when retracted. The triangular shape exactly matched the shape of the rubber pad retainer piece on the main frame. It seems some PO had lost the rubber cushion and allowed the center stand to rattle against the frame for xx,000 miles, neatly rubbing a hole in the tube. At some point, some one had rightly noticed and replaced the missing bumper, but wrongly asumed that the hole was not an issue. The hole seems to have allowed water and corrosion to work away inside the tube and thin the material to todays breaking point.
Due to limited finances at the moment ($208) for a new unit), I plan to attempt a weld repair with an internal pin machined to fit tightly into the remaining tube and plug welded and otherwise welded to complete a sturdy repair.
Anyone else ever have such a failure? If so, how was the success at repairing if attempted?
