Decided to let it heat up after a run to see if fan was ok.
Was well in the red before it did. I know it goes high before it cuts in.

Afterwards I noticed water on the ground. Expansion tank was almost empty. Topped up with deionised (don't start that row again).

Should't have though it would boil so much.
Drive 300 miles since seems ok.

It seems like your fan kicks in a bit late, according to the temp. gauge (and the fact that it boils).
The cause could be some resistance in the circuit from the sensor (behind radiator, down, left) to the motronic unit (or a bad sensor).
Check and clean connectors at both ends, to check the sensor have a look in the tech stickies, it`s different sensors before and after 7/93.

Thanks for that - it's a new fan. But it hadn't run for some time as since I cleaned the rad and the weather wasn't hot anyway it prob. hadn't cut in for a while. I will try it again and give the fan a spin first.

I don`t think the fan is the problem, it seems like it get the signal to start all to late.

Even boiling the water shouldn't spill it, it should just release a little bit of vapor slowly. Are tyou sure you had no air in the circuit that would expand a lot when the temperature rises?

Yes- it could be that after filling when putting in new fan there was some air left although I thiought I had got it all out.

Still pushing water - where could air be trapped.
I took off the filler cap for a look and it was full!
Spose run it with cap off and see??

What would bad rad cap do ??

If you can`t build up the pressure, the boil point get lower.

When mine was spitting up, a new radiator cap fixed it. I've also heard of guys just using a new gasket to solve the problem as well.
