The fuel tank thread has reminded me that whether the tank is full or not my garage sometimes smells of fuel (BTW it isn't the Norton or BSA).
Not looked yet, too busy riding, but come winter, I want to find this.
Any ideas where best to look, no smart ass replies please, Ladies & Gentlemen? _________________ Regards Tim,

I`ll guess some would evaporate through the lock barrel area in the filler cap.

Could be the joint around the filler cap. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Our tanks are vented. Originally the vent was connected the the crankcase thru a hose connection at the right rear of the fuel tank. If you have put in the accumulater cup then its possible to smell some fumes. Btdt. _________________ Ride safe.

I get a bit of a whiff now and then, especially if the tank is full. I just chaulk it up to normal venting. _________________ Steve

I have had the same issue with mine. I brought it up at a Paul Glaves K bike seminar at one of the nationals. He thought it was probably the accumulator cup. _________________ Rod Kilduff

Thanks for all the replies. Could be any of the above. It started to smell in the last year. Usually after having been run, even if only to take it from the drive into the garage. Makes no matter whether tank is full or empty. However, I get the impression that it's coming from the fuel pipes, fuel rail or injectors. More vapour than leak at the moment IMHO. _________________ Regards Tim,

Have a good look at the left hand side of your fuel tank, especially near where the fairing pockets meet the tank. The aluminium tanks develop pin holes, especially under / around / alongside where the fuel pump is mounted inside the fuel tank.
I could smell petrol for months before I spotted the pin hole in the tank of my 93 K1100RS. 2 part epoxy fuel tank repair fixed it. It's been there for 4 years so far and has stayed put.
cheers,
Andrew |

Hello Tim...
Just a thought,,, BUT check the area around the injectors to see if the vapour is strongest there. I mention this because the std. injector O-rings ( 7 x 3.52 Viton ) may have deteriorated, or damaged slightly during installation. No long ago we had an issue with fuel in the UK forming amines in the gas ( ie: static gasoline such as MIGHT occur if either the lower or upper o-rings had a slight leak allowing a tiny pocket of gas to sit idly ) and thus causing the rings to soften and promote permeation. IF the rings have not been replaced with a known fluroelastomer (FKM ), but perhaps the local AutoStore variety, it could be a cause for a potential leak or weep, and thus the vapour that you detect.... JUST a thought !!
Very best regards.....// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Well Ernie & Andrew, those were two of my initial thoughts. Not quite as comprehensive as in Ernie's reply. Now I know what size & type of O ring to buy before I get the spanners out this winter. Will report findings when I cease regular riding. _________________ Regards Tim,
