Hi.
During a touring trip trough europe my final drive started to "sing" more and more in high tune, so I went to the closest town to change the oil and hope it would last until a beemer garage. Well it didn't, it started to scream and smell and finally sounded like metal to metal sceeqing. And us aiming toi the nearest parking place.
The drive was warm leaking something that once was oil now more smoke smelling tar.
Got the bike towed to the nearest garage who possible could wrench on a beemer, a citroen garage ;(
The main bearring had cracked along the most of the outer ring. Appr. 300 degr. of half the ring was in small pices. Luckely this didn't happend in higher speed, that could be fatal or of one of the loose bits had jamed between the main gearwheel and the input shaft gearwheel.
As the bike took time to repair and I was in a hurry home appr. 3200km north of the garage I got a car and trailer and towed the bike home.
Now to my question is it needed to reshim the input shaft to the final drive while only changing the 120mm bearring? |

I don't know. I've never heard of having to do that.
However my gut tells me no.

At least change both bearings, the large and smaller one at the other side.
Now if you have to change more, which could be the case since parts went through the entrance part of the drive, you'd better buy a used drive. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Summit:
Towed my bike home and some test rides since then among them a weekend trip on 700 km gravel and some tarmac.
Real fun feeling both front and rear sliding on the gravel and some mud.
It's possible to give a bit of gas in the bends and feel the rear coming out
Downside of the gravel fun the stearing bearing whent gone on 30 km of tough roadwork.
A Q. on this how much should you preload the steering bearing?
Secondly my bike dropped by itselve standing on the centerstand from a strom wind, some cracks in the upper faring, how to repair it.
Have been using PlasticPading fiberglas filler so far. Any tips.
A note. seems that I have to realize that the LT are a LT not a GS though it's not so easy facing some challening roads. |
