At least it has all the food groups, meaty (alleged) shit, covered in flour shit, floating in green shit, covered in red shit. All options covered... Just need a stiff scotch to wash it down. _________________ K1100RS '97

Nice work Gwen. It really isn't that hard to get all the electrons going in the correct direction.
Thanks for all the detailed pictures- when I start in down in my garage, the LAST thing I think about is a camera. _________________ John & Cathy

So as you might know the K1100 are hot bikes to ride and I've heard that if I insulate the fuel tank it would cut down on the heat that makes it to my butt and legs.
This is what it looked like to start with.
I covered the overflow ports.
But as I'm cleaning the old adhesive off gas still keeps escaping from them.
So I siphon off the fuel. Well, most of what didn't end up on the ground.
Ok, time to apply the aluminum backed fiberglass that came with self adhesive backing.
I must say so, that looks pretty damn good, especially for someone who has never done anything like that.
I pick it up to put it on the bike and some remaining fuel gurgles out of the now uncovered overflow port and within minutes it completed delaminated what took me a few hours to accomplish.
Nothing left but the adhesive film and it was starting to lift off.
I got so disgusted I called it quits that day.
I looked around and found a super flexible, aluminum backed fiberglass WITHOUT adhesive and then did some research and found an adhesive rated for temps -65 F to 400 F and when set 100% resistant to gasoline. It's called Permatex Super Weather strip (Not the black one)
I start with the saddle this time.
That went well but the glue is hard to work with and hell to get off my hands. It took Xylol and a scotch bright. So before I work on the tank I get some Nitrile gloves.
First, clean off this junk. It took gasoline, then Xylol and lastly Dawn soap.
Note I'm now using an old tire instead of the chair.
The lighting in this pic doesn't do it justice, it really came out very well.
The gloves REALLY helped as I could just pull off a pair that was too sticky to work with and put on a clean pair, so I went through about 8 pair.
Next up, wiring in a AC/DC inverter and charging system for my CPAP.

Hi, Gwen,
Looks good! In the trade, the weatherstrip adhesive is known as "gorilla snot". It worked well to stick the "R75/7" panels to the engine of the R75/7 I rebuilt a number of years ago. _________________ Ride Safe,

I think it could hold the wheels on sans bolts.

`bout covering the seat baseplate: it might be an idea to leave the vent holes in the baseplate open.
So the air inside don`t have to seek for other places to escape, as it being compressed when you sit down on the seat.

If I understand stand you, you are talking about the small square pockets/holes.
First, there is no air flow communication between the sitting place and the underside of the saddle base.
They only serve to strenghten the form and allow air flow across the underside.
If I open the aluminum to allow the engine heat to fill those pockets it would defeat the whole heat shield consept.

Good work there Gwen.
My current brick with the engine exposed more than on a K1100RS seems to run cooler.
Still wondering about using an oil or diff cooler in the gas line before the fuel returns to the tank. Can't hurt? _________________ John & Cathy

Maybe it wouldn`t be a problem, but the volume of air inside would change a bit when you getting on and of the seat.
Depending on the drivers weight and how soft/hard the foam is, and in the long term the foil could start to loosen around the vent holes.

Gwen, this is a good idea for your battery covers. I like.
Wonder if I could replace the Velcro on the LT's front fenda's with such a setup. Hmmmmmm...................... _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Thank you. Now I understand.

If not, just send me that address and I'll get it out to you as soon as I can.

Ok, now wiring a system so that I can use my CPAP (sleep apnea machine) while camping w/o AC power.
First, the special batteries for this machine will not accept a charge via DC power according to the company that makes them.
Below you see AC/DC power inverter, the battery pack w/ DC female plug, and the AC wall plug to DC male plug.
The power for the whole thing is pulled thru the Blue Sea fuse block.
All tucked in.
Due to the power draw and risk of it running and me forgetting that, Steve wired in an external switch here. (note the fob for the dimmer below)
I wired in a LED dimmer.
Low.
Medium.
High.
That way if the charger is running I can tell by the LED.
And the dimmer makes it good for day or night. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Minor updates.
Ok the saddle was MUCH cooler but I still got my right inner thigh burned from the heat off the engine. So I threw on a Johnny Blanket.
Steve came up with fix for the broken tab.
Brilliant!!!
I glued it in with that stuff I used on the tank heat shield.

As anyone who knows me knows I'm hard on my bikes. And two events that involved Steve and this bike hasn't been good to it either.
The left fairing fracture and tanks dents were his added touches.
Over the past month I traveled twice to S.C. to help my father gut and remodel his master bath. I learned to hang sleet rock and wall paper. I learned to remove the old vinyl floor and prep and lay in a new vinyl floor. I refinished all the wood work as well and helped install a new step-thru shower.
While I was gone, Steve took it upon himself to get my bike painted. We had talked about and it was agreed it would be cheaper to find an undamaged fuel tank to have painted than to repair the other one and Steve found one on EBay.
Here's the parts list:
1. Fuel tank - bought used - got painted
2. Side covers - bought new - got painted
2a. Side cover insulation - new
3. Mirrors - OME - got painted
4. Turn sig. lens - new with gaskets
5. Belly pan - Like-new, bought w/ bike from owner
6. Tail - Like-new, bought w/ bike from owner
7. (L) & (R) Mid-fairings - Like-new, bought w/ bike from owner
8. Front fender - Like-new, bought w/ bike from owner
9. BMW rondels - new
10. Upper fairing - stolen off the Shop Whore and currently at the paint shop.
To my knowledge, this is not a K1100RS fender, but came with the bike when I bought it.
While we had her naked we'll attend to some other maintenance issues as well.
Ok, I'm off the garage to start undressing her. Steve will be home about 1800 from teaching MSF and I hope to have a lot done before he gets home. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
