Scott - isn't there a difference in the way a fuse blows if there is an overload or short circuit? I'm sure there is for house fuses - don't know if the same applies for 12 volt. Just a thought - not sure it was a good one, though. _________________ Jim

Jim, once the current reaches the fuse rating (say 15 amp) then the fuse wire will melt out weather or not it is a short to earth or drawing more current than the fuse is rated at. The fuse can't tell the difference. RCB type fuses in the home work in a different way. _________________ K1100rs 1992 model

Well I have reluctantly had to call in reinforcements to help, I have tried everything in my limited but willing knowledge possible. So I have an auto electrician coming in an hour. _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

Jim, the fuse will blow, melt, when it reaches it's thermal limit(15amps in this case).
The lamp idea will limit the current to the wattage of the lamp without blowing. Thus allowing you to trace the fault with little damage or fire. _________________ Ride safe.

I gave up and called in a friend who is an auto electrician, he found the fault within 3 mins using the bulb method. It was a wire on the front brake light circuit under the tank, just worn by years of vibration he reckons. Anyway I learnt a lot even though I feel a little frustrated I couldn't solve it...I feel much better prepared if it happens again, so my time wasn't totally wasted and I did do a little job on my speedo I had been putting off. _________________ Riding a 1995 Marakesh red K1100rs

Good to know you got it sorted - even if you had to have a little help... _________________ Jim
