Hi, riding along on my K1100rs in torrential rain today my fuel guage reading fell off then noticed Temp gauge also gone, checked fuses and it had blown, then it blew another straight away, so, where do I start looking for my problem? any help appreciated. Ta.

Have you got a multi-meter to check for a short circuit/ground fault?

Does your bike have heated grips? I'd find the plug for them and disconnect it.
According to the schematic I'm looking at, the circuit feeding the guages also feeds the grips. Green/Black wire.
The power goes from the fuse thru the grips BEFORE it goes thru the switch to turn them on/off.
You could have a bare wire where it goes in/out of the handle bars, or a broken wire where the throttle rotates and now shorting out.
Not uncommon to happen.
Too many times a shorted grip circuit causes more damage than a blown fuse.

Well, it looks as though you are going to have to start tracing wire. Same circuit for guages, brake lights.
Same (green/black stripe) color.
Check the wires running along the frame rail down to the foot brake switch.
From the front brake switch down along the handlebars/steering head area, where it may have rubbed thru the insulation.

Oh that's not good, I just rode home 345 miles with no brake lights!! I didn't realise they shared the same circuit. Whoops.

You said you rode thru a bunch of rain/wet.
You might look for some gunk/grime down with the switch for the foot/rear brake pedal. Could be as simple as that causing a blown fuse.

Checked the wiring without dismantling anything, sprayed all the switches, took the brake light bulb out cleaned all connections changed the bulb put new fuse in, washed bike with copious amounts of water and the fuse is OK. Which is annoying in a way.

trace the wires from your front brake switch and disconnect plug(probably under the tank).
Same for the rear brake switch, it's along the frame rail right side near the rear brake fluid level container, unplug it.
In the electrical box (under the gas tank too) unplug the BMU (Bulb Monitor Unit).

Leave the guages unplugged.

This should then have all of the switches unplugged.

Then check and see if you still have a fault causing the fuse to blow.

If the fuse holds, plug them in one at a time as see witch one causes the fault.

Maybe riding in the rain caused one of the brake switches to go bad or to cause a fault internal to the BMU unit.

While you are tracing the wires up near the front look real close for skinned wires of any kind. Especially near the steering head area where they flex when turning the handlebars.

Ok, now I'm really confused and frustrated, I have the bike stripped speedof, tank, seat all off to look at wires and possible shorts but can't find anything wrong, so what now? also, what amp fuses are they? if I put a fifteen amp in, it will blow and take another one with it, I think the fuel pump circuit. so what fuses should I have in? the manuals conflict, some say all 15 others the other one says 5 amp so I am confused as hell. The fuse that blows is the one that is on the fuel and temp gauge, brake monitor and brake light circuit. I really am struggling please help.

I'll check it tomorrow but I'm sure it's also a 15 amp, it doesn't always blow, and it never blows on its own just as the first one does...sometimes!

Something you might give a try, this should also save you some money on fuses.

Find yourself a decent wattage 12vdc lamp, like an old headlamp bulb.(but it has to be a good one. Rolling Eyes )
Connect across the open fuse wires.
The intent here is that as you have no fault the lamp will be out(off). When you are messing with the wires and find your short/fault the lamp will light up(on).

Don't use an led lamp or test light as I not sure how well it would pass the current.
A head lamp bulb will pass sufficient current without burning anything up.

An old electricians trick from many moons ago when edison base fuse boxes were still popular. Unsrew the fuse, screw in the lamp, when you clear you fault, the lamp goes out.
