I got a call the other day from one of my fellow local riders. He has been talking about a new bike for a while. Well to make a long story short,..... he got it.
2011 Dyna Wideglide.
The supprising question that he asked me was,
"Would you ride it home for me?"
So of course I'm not going to say no to riding a new bike.
I have to admit it was a couple of firsts for me.
1. First ride on a Harley,
2. Not only the 1st ride, but on a "Brand spanking new one" at that.
I got to put on the 1st hundred miles for him.
To those that may be wondering, NO I'm not going to replace my BMW for one of these. _________________ Ride safe.

You must of gotten some interesting looks from other Harley riders. I don't think I have ever seen a Harley rider wearing that kind of gear. _________________ Rich

Or the looks from the other staff/customers when we walked in the door, as I was wearing my Sturgis BMW shirt. _________________ Ride safe.

YES, (sort-of) inquiring minds want to know. "Ride report!!"
Hey can't be bad- our good friend and Neurosurgeon extraordinaire, Gui has one alongside the brick in his garage
Second question- why would someone with their own endorsement want someone else to ride it home?? _________________ John & Cathy

Maybe they didn't want to be seen with a Massey Davidson for a while, until they had a chance to break the news to their friends? _________________ David, owner of:

First thing I had to get used to right away was the forward footpegs and controls. I felt like I had my legs out on my hwy pegs of my LT.
2ndly that I never really got used to was the v-twin vibe. This bike has the 6 spd trans and at 55-65 it didn't need it. 4th was sweet, 5 was ok, but 6 was too low rpm for me(too much vibe).
| Quote: | | Second question- why would someone with their own endorsement want someone else to ride it home?? |
I asked him that too.
1 he doesn't have his endorsement yet, even though he been riding for 4-5yrs. He's got a 1200 sporty now.
2 he didn't feel comfortable enough in a strange town/streets and an unfamiliar bike(like it's familiar to me?)
I think the bigger touring bikes(glides, kings and classics) have better vibe isolation than these smaller cruisers. _________________ Ride safe.

Scott,
Similar to Johnnie's Ducati Supersport (maybe w/o the BIG vibes)
Up to 60 mph, 5th and 6th are useless- 4th is barely useable. Riding back roads it is a 2 speed bike- 2nd and 3rd
(At least) Duc's are intendeded for 80-100+ mph
A friend of ours has a 750 Vulcan that I have briefly ridden- the feet way out front position is, er.....different. _________________ John & Cathy

Scott,
I know what you mean about vibes and hoof position. My son-in-law in Ore. has an 1100 Shadow or something I tried to ride.
Felt like a tractor and maybe sitting on a gynecologist table. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Hi guys...
I know what Bob means re the "tractor feel". I rode a friends raked out "fat boy" ( whatever model FXLFXCH??) with feet stretched way out and hands way higher than my shoulders, and found that not only did I feel only 'marginally' in control, but also that counter steering was out of the question ! Every turn, right or left was an ordeal. I could never feel at one with such a machine. What a relief it was to get off of that contraption. Did I look cool ?? No way!... and neither did I feel so cool either. Scared 'shtless' might better describe it.
My first, last and hopefully only ever experience in the world of choppers !

That one probably is. Skinny front wheel, single front rotor...
My '07 Road King, however, is THE most reliable bike I've ever owned. The brick is #2 (it's had one expensive repair). The worst is my shop whore F800GS...
I would never buy a street bike with a single front rotor. Except a plated dirt bike, of course... _________________ M N B

I wouldn't mind trying one of the bigger bikes sometime. Like Ted mentioned a while back, trying a ride with actual foot plates instead of pegs and to try the heel/toe shifter.
I have seen some(not a lot) of the bigger bikes have some serious shake to the whole bike. I think the newer ones have better engine mounts designed.
It's just one of those "experience it" things on my bucket list. Not to mention being able to say why I like my BMW better. Having actually ridden other bikes for better comparison.
The only other V-twin that I have ridden was the Yamaha Virago that I owned back in '04. It was only 750cc and carburated, but it wasn't all vibey like that HD, not even close. _________________ Ride safe.

G'Morning Scott.....
""Yamaha Virago that I owned back in '04. It was only 750cc and carburated,""
I still have an '82 and it runs great...a real collage of parts...but a true 'seat of the pants' bike ! Its my 'around the state, crap weather' bike.

I have an 05 Ultra Classic, the big touring Harley. I have over 83,000 miles on that bike and haven't really ridden it in 2 years. The motor on the touring and Dyna bikes are in rubber mounts, the Soft Tails use a counter balance inside the engine to help with the vibration. After 20000 miles on the 1200 LT I forgot how much they vibrate plus, mine has a 95 cui kit with a different cam in it. I had a few issues with it but, the LT has left me on the side of the road the first weekend I had it and it was in the shop 21 days for a high idle problem. Machines break, no way around it. The Harley is for sale, it's been a great bike but, it's no match for the LT. Power, smoothness, bells & whistles and overall comfort I'll take the beemer. Just my 2 cents. _________________ Former WVMSFKRS
