|

Since I switched the tail & brake lights to led, my ip warning light runs continuously. I know/think/assume its caused by the led bulbs not outputting enough current to tell the system "we are here and working".
If this is right can I just remove the warning bulb or is that needed to complete the circuit to the rear lights? _________________ Living with a German builds character.

Well I think pulling the bulb is not the way to go. It seems to cause a rather unpleasant smell inside the electrical/fuse box.
I put the light back in and this behaviour stops.
I am speculating that the BMU is trying to push power to the missing bulb?
If so what happens if the bulb just fails? _________________ Living with a German builds character.

I don't know. I want to know what the IP address of your light bulb is though.. that might help.

Good Grief all I wanted to do was replace the freakin stock bulbs with freakin leds! Is that too much to ask people, throw me a freakin bone!
Well since my Evil plan has suffered a setback, will work on putting lasers on sharks until the Run-N-Lites arrive.
Draggin this bike kicking & screaming into the 21st century is work! _________________ Living with a German builds character.

Did you even bother to read the link I posted above? It tells you how to remove the BMU so you can run LEDs. It's VERY easy to do.

Please explain this concept to me of how a circuit is trying to "push" power to a bulb. Something backed up by physics, logic and an understanding of electron flow would probably help. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Yes, I read your post, quite thoroughly, several times and was even sober.
In it you referenced Run-N-Lites and how they provide enough current to keep the BMU happy, even when running led tail/brake lights. This seemed to me a better solution than removing the BMU and modifying the wiring. Still learning about the BMU functionality but I am thinking it may be required to light the triangle when the sidestand is down as well.
Anyway the RNLs have the benefit of making the bike more visible which is a good thing IMHO. Thanks for the suggestion!
Regarding my use of the word "push", it was based less on physics and more on vernacular (relay, transmit, send, convey, etc).

The BMU has nothing to do with the side stand switch. All the side stand switch does is complete a circuit between the fuel pump relay and the Motronic. (Engine computer.)
The Run-n-Lites deal still doesn't allow you to use an LED brake light bulb and keep the BMU happy, just the tail light.
While you're messing with lighting you should also consider adding headlight relays:

Correct but the BMU has an input from the fuel injection relay (terminal 15).
and the only input to the warning light is from the BMU.
I will check out the headlamp link.
Btw- did you want to sell your unused BMU? _________________ Living with a German builds character.

The connection at terminal 15 is just switched power from the #1 fuse. The FI relay has no impact on the BMU.
You'll find lots of green/black wires all over the bike - they're mostly switched power.
Sure, I'll sell you a BMU. I've removed them from all four of my Ks because the only non-LED lights on my bikes are the headlights. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
