Push up the upper part as much as possible and pull hard the air filter while moving it sideway at the same time. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

The channel on the bottom part goes all of the way around. The channel on the top of it does not. (Look at your new one.) Lift it up and pull it out _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Think I lifted the tank and moved the sponge baffles.
Take a pic before you move them if you decide to.
It looks obvious but not when you try to put them back. |

Look around the filter compartment when you lift the lid. There is an area to slip the filter right out.
When I changed mine, I nearly couldn't tell the old from the new. Won't spending that money again for a while. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Those air filters are WAY oversized for the engine. The BMW recommended service interval is 12k miles.
I change them every 50k whether they need it or not. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

+1
Pulled mine on my previous RS at about 45,000 miles. Looked pretty clean.
Yes they are a P.I.T.A. to get out. A true wrestling match. What were the designers thinking?? _________________ John & Cathy

The leftside heat baffle extends over the top of the filter box as does the right side one you will have to take off anyway; then there is the coolant header tank connection pipe and a bundle of cables, all of which need to be removed, moved aside a bit or "massaged" to make a bit of free space to lift the top of the intake chamber. You only need very little lift as the filter element ridge is not more than quarter of an inch high. Then it comes out no problem.
Good luck

I was able to get my filter out without taking the side cover and air tube off.
Anyone have a good alternate/replacement air filter. It apears my filter is the original and actually looks pretty good for a bike with 47K on the clock.
I just don't want to wait for one to arrive in the mail nor have to pay $20 to get it shipped over night. I expect to get the injectors back by this weekend and want to be ready with an air filter. _________________ 1994 K 1100 RS |
