Hi, Ive just bought my first BMW, a k1100 LT SE, 1996 ,red and with 37,k miles. It was previously owned by a chap who was 73 yrs old.

Being my first BMW and previously owning Honda's and Harley's I was very, very pleased with the bike.

My first ride took me to Stonehenge and the bike did not miss a beat but I did get a slight smell of petrol every so often.

Any ideas?

Check integrity of fuel pipes, cap, injector rail etc. Tanks have been known to let go at the seams.
Are you sure it's petrol ? Mine has a whiff occasionally, but it's an oil weep from the front of the engine, which I must get round to soon.
Welcome from a Nottinghamian.

I have had this occassionally, but only after a run.I have checked all pipes and connectors and seals and all seems well. These tanks do get a lot of engine heat and there is a fume vent on the rear of the tank just below the front of the seat.... so I have wondered if this is where the smell of fuel originates??? Idea

I get the odd whiff every now and again, but never found anything wrong. Same here with the fuel vent, unless anybody knows better.

Cheers.

Rich.

I smell gas once in a while, too, but I've never found a leak. Perhaps it's the gas tank venting.

Ditto all of the above comments, slight whiff every now and then, especially when I open the tank bag after sitting for awhile, I assume it's just venting.

Yeah .....some folks put petrol in the top cap.... whereas some folks pour alcohol in there.... the bikes don't seem to worry.... get a bit wobbly sometimes though.. Laughing Wink

G'day and Welcome Mate!
