From the symptoms you describe, it's more likely the HES. It would be much easier to check the HES than to rig up temporary power to the pump. _________________ Jim

Thanks for the continued support - I need it after today. First 10 miles - fine, then stopping every 200yds in traffic, or mile or so on open road. Starts up again after a 5 min cool down.
Have ordered a s/h HES (£49). Checked fault codes. Immediately I got upper HES sensor no signal. Great! On the right track. But when I checked again after another 10 mins or so (without clearing the fault) I got water temp sensor out of range. Bizarre. Would the water temp sensor give the symptoms I've experienced? Where on the bike is the temp sensor?
Thanks again _________________ '96 K1100rs

There are two temp sensors. The one that feeds the Motoronic is on a pipe at the front of the cylinder head where water returns to the cooling system. You need to take the radiator off to access it.
The other temp sensor is on the bottom of the water/oil pump and only feeds the temp gauge. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

OK fitted a new (second hand) HES and ...... still exactly the same. Cutting out after 10 miles or so from cold. Then rough running or cutting out continuously. Will now try to by pass the tank connection to see if that helps. If that fails, I'm completely out of ideas? _________________ '96 K1100rs

and having just tried, my home-made elec connection to the pump gives the same results. _________________ '96 K1100rs

Not sure if this is your issue but I was riding home one day and BLAM, bike just quit running in the middle of a left turn. Coasted into a parking lot and tthe first thing I looked at was the connector for the sidestand switch - which I have shorted. One of the wires had come loose from the back of the connector. Cut the connector off and taped the wires together to get home for a more permanent repair.
Worth looking at if you haven't. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

SORTED! And the answer was......water in the fuel.
Had the brainwave last night, so this morning drained tank and dried with cloth, changed fuel filter, fresh fuel with some drying agent and just had 70 miles of hiccup/cut-out free riding.
I guess over night the water would settle out, but after 10 miles or so it would be fully mixed in with the fuel to the point that the engine just couldn't ingest any more.
When I think of the hours spent trying to trace this (including rad out, removing coolant sensor to test etc), and a polythene bag taped over the filler cap would have done it! _________________ '96 K1100rs

Nice work
Been following the saga closely,
At least you know a dang sight more about the venerable K now
The filter would have been marginal as well coz it hates water and would have been under a lot of strain.
Good on you for sticking it through and from me, many thanks to K11OG list Folk for the opportunity to gain knowledge of the bike and how to fix the inevitable probs
All the best now |

What would that have done? Maybe show condensation?
What's with the computer diagnostics? Were they aberrant faults or what?
You must be breathing a lot easier now mate
Funny how the brainwave of cleaning out the tank happened overnight .
Good work. |

Re poly bag, since I figure that the only way water can get in is through the filler cap, the poly bag would stop any rain ingress. (This is, assuming the fuel wasn't contaminated in the first place, which I doubt since our car gets its supplies at the same outlet and is (touch wood) fine.
Thanks all for your help and encouragement. _________________ '96 K1100rs

Water can get in there the same way it gets into the oil, thru condensation.
The less fuel you keep in the tank most of the time provides the most oppertunity for condensation to accumulate. _________________ Ride safe.

Have a look if the drain channel next to the cap is free. _________________ Cheers, Rene

Make sure the entire rain drain system is in good order. If the bike does not have an air accumulator, and the hose is kinked under the tank, you'll have rain water going in the tank. _________________ Jim
