|
|
I have a 1993 K1100 LT with the stock exhaust system. Both bike and exhaust are in very good condition. My question is, has anyone out there in K1100 land every tried cutting off the can like extension of the exhaust that goes under the bike, drained out the catalyst, cut off the can, and rewelded it back up? I have been thinking about doing that to maybe increase the sound a little and decrease the backpressure somewhat and wondered if there was any experience in doing that either good or bad. Maybe I'm just looking for a winter project but I would appreciate any ideas and/or input.
Thanks,

I think that idea is based in older hot rod mentality.
I am not saying you are old, or a rodder, or dumb.
The entire system is put together quite elegantly using the head flow, air box, injection mapping, etc encompassing all components to perform together at their optimum.
It is highly unlikely doing what you are describing will make any worthwhile performance gains, heck any positve gains at all. Maybe a little bit on the way top end.
It will most definately sound different though I bet.
If you really are bored to tears and just can't wait to try it, please post lot's of pictures and a recording when done.
If your time is worth the $, save it and buy a complete system designed for the bike. Used ones pop upnow and again.
Best of luck! _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

You won't see a gain, you may well see a loss, and the Cat is there for a reason - reducing emissions.
Maybe it won't make a difference where you live but it sure does here and if you ever plan to sell the bike I wouldn't touch it. Cheers. _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

I'm not sure how true this is given that aftermarket pipes like a Remus sound fantastic, give 2-4hp, are a shit-ton lighter and don't have a cat.
The stock exhaust is a boat anchor. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

This system [ shown here unfinished / unpolished ] is shortly coming to the end of a 6 month road trial period. The similar K100 version has now done 10K + miles and has performed perfectly. Mid range grunt improved and the sound.........well it sounds like a motorcycle.
The K1100 system does away with th cat - not worried about emmissions and I'm surprised you do your side of the pond - got a lot of catching up to do friends.
Initial feedback is good. No problems in starting, running, tickover etc. and gas mileage has been improved slightly.
The test bike has run two different cans - one is "street legal" but still sounds the biz, and the othr is , well - loud.
When trials have been completed the system will be put into full production for Realm Engineering. A set of stainless downpipes have also been jigged up for K1100 owners.
Please remember, the system shown is the prototype and has not had the welds linished and polished.
OOOps nearly forgot - it's 1/3rd of the weight of the stock system !!!

I got an 11hp boost by installing a K&N air filter.

| That is a mod often talked about on R 1100gs forums. Supposedly it makes the sound on the GS slighly more robust, drops some weight, and many feel adds some mid range. Have not done it so I don't know for sure. If I were to try it I might pick up a used exhaust system and use that for a test run. That way you can always put the original back on. |

If anyone wants to experiment I have one from a 24k 93 K1100RS. The bike sat for a long time so it's heat shield is pretty corroded but it seemed to work when I got the bike running prior to parting it out.
$100 plus shipping (US only)
I can get pics later..... _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Gidday. I did play around with the exhaust a while back but I did it by modifying a k100 stock system . The header pipes fit the k1100 which allows you to play around with the muffler as its detachable . k100 systems are easy to get and cheap . I opened up the muffler and shortened it also removing most of the serious amount of baffles in it . One of the interesting things I found in there was the individual pipes continue different lenghts into the muffler so the header pipes are all tuned lengths. The result was a lot lighter system that sounded loud, maybe a touch of top end gain with some tinkering I did on the intake but I returned to the standard as this is my touring rig and my ears could n,t put up with the noise on long hauls. PS IT DID SOUND WICKED . There are some pics somewhere back in the posts . Hope this helps it can be done.Anyway its summer here so I,ll be out riding. Cheers Ausbrick Mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

Yes, I couldn't believe what I was seeing when we opened up a stock can - a partially tuned length [ nowhere near the same ] opening into what is effectively a collector before going through baffles !!!!!!!!!
I don't think it could be possible to make more of a ballsup of the "design".
The complete system that we are developing [ stainless steel ] is so much lighter than stock - that alone should be worth the equivalent of 5-6 bhp !
Prices will be finalised in the next 4-6 weeks, but I expect prices to be more than comparable to other aftermarket systems. _________________ Beachcomber '93 K1100RS / '93 K1100LT and several K100's |

Hi Beachcomber. Glad to see your still developing items for our k bikes. I found the 4 into 1 is the tricky bit. Will your final exhaust be more streamlined compared to the prototype in the photo . I know how difficult it is trying to join all 4 pipes with them all in line and no stress .Even BMW with all that crout know how had trouble with that area cracking, the lighter muffler should help there, also will you be selling the headers seperatly as postage to Aus would be cheaper and easier to pack. I can buy a muffler here to suit . Thanks ausbrick mick. Ps looking forward to seeing how it goes keep up the good work. _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |
