|
|
93 RS parts bike I picked up. Peg plate bolts came out OK but the friggin peg plates are rusted onto the ABS bracket. This bike has only 24k on it but sat for a LONG time. By swapping all of the fuel system components I was able to get it running.
Anyhow, the peg plates are really stuck to the ABS/peg plate bracket. Tried spraying them with Kroil last night and then trying to pry them off today but no go.
I think I may have to run through some Dremel cutting wheels and cut the bracket.
Any other bright ideas out there? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Drake,
Tried any sideways "taps" with a dead blow (or other soft) hammer? Seems to break things free. I did have to get a bit aggressive........
This worked for me last summer when I had to do my emergency clutch-ectomy.
Good luck. _________________ John & Cathy

Get an oil pen, write "Norton" on it neatly and it will fall off. DAMHIK. _________________ K1100RS '97

After multiple dousings in Kroil, I tried a crow bar on the left one. It broke. Doh!
Since that was then busted, I experimented with inserting the front bolt part ways and using a puller. That loosened it up enough that I could rock it to get the rear one loosened up. Then I used that method to pull the right one successfully.
Then I went to the computer to post this and saw the suggestion above. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I continue to be impressed by Max's mechanical savvy.
This forum has many K11 gurus on it, who humbly dish out their innovative and wide spread knowledge to all our benefits.
Gotta thank ALL you guys for sharing words and pics and humour.

Suppose it's a bit of a lesson for us all - the K11s aren't getting any younger, powder coat paint doesn't last forever and when steel and alloy meet with water you get an electrolytic corrosion that's way worse than plain rust... it's mechanically strong and you can't always fix it like you would traditionally - it won't ever be rust sliding on rust, it's more crystalline.
Whats worked for me so far has been to yes, use penetrating oil, but always gentle pressure - comes off eventually, then you can wire-wheel & go from there. Remember that lots of the K bike alloy was chill-cast (solid outside, looks like sponge inside) and is only strong in the designed directions - get it wrong and it's a gonner.
(Upcoming fun job: replace clutch, regasket & inspect gearbox while "in there"... bit of a PITA as only just had all the battery / ABS out to do the alternator drive, but did find a shattered battery tray mount along the way) |
