|
Yesterday while holding it so the man that hooked it was trying to remove the hook.
It didn't hurt at first but within 5 minutes it starts to.
We googled what to do and learned this.
"Because stingray venoms are composed of heat-labile proteins, doing this will alter the tertiary structure of the polypeptide protein molecule by denaturing and thereby deactivating the poison. Ultimately this means that the venom will have less effect. Not only does the hot water help with the venom, but at the same time it will significantly reduce the amount of pain the victim is experiencing."
Now knowing it was not tissue necrotizing and no matter how bad it felt, it would go away, Steve helped heat up some very hot water to soak my arm in.
That turned into 5 hours of the most white-hot, writhing, agony, moaning, shaking, nerve stabbing, skin on fire pain I've ever endured.
I asked for a drink and Steve poured me a 12 oz glass of Capt. Morgan's and butterscotch schnapps which I finished within 10 minutes.
Things get fuzzy after that. Poor Steve was now saddled with a very, very drunk Gwen and the alcohol didn't stop the pain at all.
After some time Steve can't watch me hurt any more and took me to the ER.
They gave me percocet and took a X-ray and sent me home with Cipro and more percocet.
Today it’s just tender and sore.
I won’t take the Cipro unless it begins to look infected. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Jesus Gwen, glad you are ok.
Bunch of Steve Irvin thoughts just shot in my head.
Don't take the Cipro unless you have to, bunch of people have had permanent neuro injuries as a result of side effects of it. (NikonsandVstroms is one) _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Wow, that sucks. At least it didn't do you in like Steve Irwin.
I'm surprised they'd give you Percocet when you're hammered like that.
Now you know why they're called stingrays. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Damn Gwen-
Didn't you see the warning printed on the underside of that thing?
Glad to hear that Rx and spirits kept you from going over the edge.

Soaking my arm.
The hot water so the only thing that eased the pain.
And just like google said, it would come in waves.

Got one of those in the bottom of my foot when I was 9 years old. Still ranks as the most intense pain I can remember. Doctor finally knocked me out with an injection so the rest of the family could get some shut eye.
I feel your PAIN, Gwen. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I'm glad you ae well and the pain is leaving.
Steve Irwin died cause the stingray hook perforated the torax and heart, if I'm not wrong.

I kicked a rock cod in a fishing boat one day. I thought the leather of my shoes was tougher than the poisoned spines on the fish. I was wrong. My big toe was on fire for quite a while. Fortunately I had a hot tub and a fifth of Crown at my disposal. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Being a marine biologist and having worked with these animals for the last 25 years I would say that I am some sort of expert.
The punctures are very painful but the venom is not deadly. You are right that it is protein based so the hot water does break it down. What you really have to worry about is secondary infection. The sheath of skin that surrounds the barb is full of nasty bacteria. Like most puncture wounds the most important thing is to keep the wound open so it heals from the inside. Other wise the surface of the wound heals over and all that bacteria festers. I would recommend getting some antibiotics while the puncture heals.
Also the barb did puncture Irwin's heart and if he had left it in essentially plugging the hole it had made until he was able to get to medical help he would probably still be alive. Of course your not thinking of that when you have a nine inch barb sticking out of your chest. _________________ Rich
