... Can a top box be easily added?

A few weeks ago I traded my KLR a '95 K11RS w/36K miles on the clock and I'd like to set it up for extended touring, maybe 6-8 weeks in Europe next summer. A top box would be a nice adddition. Does any one make a mount to fit the K-RS? Can the bracket from the LT be easily fitted to the LT?? Your thoughts please.

Regards, Paul

Givi do a rack that fits onto the tail section in place of the standard 'toast rack' that enables you to fit one of their boxes. In the UK they are around £56.

Howdy Paul,

You can easily add a 22 liter top case, I had one on my K11RS and have one now on my K75RT. You need to add the small OEM luggage rack to the rear cowl as the mount. You can find used 22L tail cases for around $150, just make sure it is not cracked around the rear hinges, that it comes with the mounting plate and locking pin, and that there is a key for the lock so you can re-key it to your ignition. You can also get a Givi tail case (or the $80 JC Whitney red China knock-off) that is upwards of 30 liters, but you'll still need to buy and install the OEM luggage rack for the Whitney one or a Givi rack for the Givi. WebBikeWorld has a great review on the Givi.

I looked at the Givi/Whitney cases when I wanted more space on my K11, I went with the BMW because I felt it fit and looked better, and because I xould key it to my ignition so I only needed one key. Here is what the BMW case looks like on my K75RT, it looks and fits on the K11RS the exact same way:

You can also easily add the K11LT rear case to your bike, though you'll need the rear integrated side/top case mounts as well as the case - unfortunately the rear LT cases and mounts are not as easy to find and are usually somewhat pricey.

K11 with the OEM LT Case:

K11 with a Givi:

Some folks also really like the Coocase cases (expensive but apparently high quality) and the Shad (less expensive but of suspect quality) but unfortunately it looks like Shad does not make a mount for the Classic K bikes.

I'd go the Givi route:

Ted, excellent presentation of the options for an RS!

My set up with the 22L top case.

Not sure why but I've never liked the hard cases, I have a ventura rack http://www.ventura-bike.com/ and a softcase for it, not the ventura one but an Rjays one http://www.rjays.com.au/home/products/luggage-city-rack-bag.html

The Ventura bags are probably fine in fact you have to buy one to get the rack which is braindead. But the racks are good.

You can get even bigger bags but I haven't needed it. You can mount it forwards of the rack leaving the rack available to tie tents, chairs sleeping bags etc onto it assuming you are going solo.

Confused Confused

Good morning all....

I dont know how you guys do it ! I looked at Shogi's rig in sheer amazement. On my K1100LT, I travelled "lightly" this past summer with only a 20# Tour Bag fitted lengthwise behind me, and at every gas stop I simply could NOT get the bike up onto the center stand for proper filling. Finally resorted to filling while sitting on the bike which I dont like to do... These bikes are so high and top heavy that a real "road packing" ( such as I could do and have done on a V-twin cruiser ) seems out of reach... in my opinion.

Good luck and best regards..............// Ernie in NH

I looked into adding a 22 liter top case, but the costs were prohibitive. If anyone has one for sale, let me know.
