I recently purchased 'Big Red' After ten years out of bikes it was so good to get back in the office 'ridden lots of 'K's in my time' a real home from home. I got it from ebay. wow buyer beware!!!
Screen not working. ABS lights flash intermittently, Top box refuses to open, Slow puncture on the front, Radio dead as a doornail and the rubber mounted steering takes some getting used to!! But after all said and done we have been thrown together to get on with it.
Surprisingly I find myself becoming attached to it. It needs me. Call me old fashion but I want to make this thing work. Is the 1100 as good as they say or are they a labour of love?
I know that I was an idiot not to check things out. Can anyone help with some advice
Stupid thing is that this will cost money but why am I writting this mail with a smile (albeit a small one) on my face. _________________ He who laughs last didn't get the joke in the first place!!

Sounds like all things that can be tackled with a little time and planning
Screen - could be easy like a switch, a connector, or lack of lube, or less fun things like the motor. Jim knows these things inside and out and hopefully will chime in
ABS - well covered, first thing is to do the easy stuff namely reset it and see if that does it, then check the battery to see if it is shot (this is very common.) Also, check connections and relay for corrosion and reseat. If not those, test for a code (several excellent threads here) and go from there.
Top Box, no idea - maybe there is something really cool in there LoL. Probably a bit of tinkering around will do it.
Radio, no idea as well - do you have the code for it???
Congrats on the purchase and welcome aboard.

Offhand, it sounds like the code is needed for the radio and, as I recall, the topbox has a complex ritual with the key to open (as opposed to unlatching the case from its rack).
And the fuses probably also ought to be examined to see if they have failed.
But in the end it doesn't sound like anything more than the small stuff you have to deal with when picking up a 15 year old bike from someone who hasn't invested himself in the details and so can't share them with a new owner. _________________ 1993 K1100LT (Washington)

Let's start with the top case - turn the key so the key slot is pointing down - push the button to the right of the handle, and keeping the button pressed, lift the handle.
That should open the top case - if the key turns.
More later.
Welcome - and best of luck! These bikes can be a labour of love - just depends on how much neglect they've had. _________________ Jim

ABS lights flashing - mine does that if it sits for several days (usually a week or more) and is indicative of a battery that is not holding voltage (or something like an alarm is draining it). So when I first get back on it after a couple of weeks the lights flash for awhile. After 30-40 miles the light does not come on the next time I start it up.
Radio - probably needs the 4 digit code to be entered - I found my code in with the owners manual.
Top Box - mine takes some fiddling - the release handle has to be pulled up pretty far until it releases the lid. Sometimes I even have to kind of wiggle the lid a bit.
Windscreen - mine did not work at first so the dealer dropped the price. After fiddling with the switch a bit while on the test ride it started to work and has performed flawlessly ever since. That's when I knew I was meant to have this bike. And I love it. Just got back from a week tour here in the West and she performed flawlessly.

Whew, thanks everyone. I feel better already. I have now taken the screen apart and found the left side cable completely seized and I cant get the motor to work when I attach it to the bikes loom although the relays seem to be operating.
Many Thanks Great Website with Great Members

Nobody's addressed the handlebars yet:
IMO, the rubber mounted handlebars are atrocious, especially if the rubber gets old. By adding some washers to the bottoms of them you can firm them up so that they're more or less rigid. Inexpensive and easy fix.
One or two washers each side. Like the silver ones in the picture below. Outside diameter should be small enough to fit in the handlebar mounting hole in the upper fork tree and the inside diameter should be large enough for the bottoms of the handlebar clamps to go through.
