|
|
Hi from Athens-Greece. I am the first owner of Black-Silver K1100RS from 1997, the last that came in Greece, now with 76500Km on the clock. The last two and half years I was not riding because of a problem I had on my right leg but now after a “hip surgery” I am ok and ready to go again. I made a service changing all the spark plugs, oils of the machine and replacement of the air intake rubbers, fuel pump. After that I had a problem with the idle. Back at the service and the spark plug of the 4th cylinder with oil on, changed but the problem stays. Back again at the service and solution is: RPMs at 1100 instead of 900-1000. I asked for a valve control but they told me it is not necessary on this model. I have to say that it is not the first time that the 4th cylinder “oils” the spark plug. Any help about all this?
Thanks
George
P.S :Excuse my poor English. |

The valves do need to be checked/adjusted periodically. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi George
I have the same bike as you with about the same KM only mine has been used without layup. You can try what Duck said but I feel it could be an oil scraper ring sticking or could be oil seal on exhaust valve not good news lets hope a valve adjustment will fix it. The problem is the bike has been standing for two years and they do not like it

Yup, I was thinking the same - maybe some lively riding with a good high-detergent oil will clean things out?
Does the bike use much oil? _________________

Gday George
Think Chrisk is right, sounds like No 4 oil control ring stuck in its groove. Have you tried taking it for a long hard run, that is get the engine up to temperature and make the rings work under load.
Good luck

As previous responses, take it for a good run, clean the plug and go for another then check.
If the problem persists it could be a valve stem oil seal, as with any engine standing for long periods can lead to hardening and perishing of rubber sealing components. _________________ I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed or numbered! |

Of course it depends upon the climate but two and a half years really isn't that long for one of these bikes to sit. My LT is proof of that. It only had <14k in 12 years and from how dirty it was when I got it (layers of dust) I don't think the guy who sold it to me had ridden it in several years. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

| Thank you all for the advices. I am wondering if there is some method to check the cylinder. Checking his compression for example. |

Gday George
You could do a compression check, if there is damage to the NO4 cylinder it may show up but the problem you describe isn't really compression related . A stuck oil control ring won't in itself affect compression. The previous replies are still good advice.
Give it a go.

Have a good ride but keep an eye on your oil level 250 Km is not that far but with the heat you have in Greece this time of year you will need to watch it if you get stuck in the Athens traffic
