as long as your gentle with the throttle in the lower gears everything is cool. and any spirited driving at all will either spin the back wheel or lift the front in all but top gear. its very smooth if driven sensibly .so much so that i used it todo my advanced motorbike test on Laughing

Yup, the fuel pump can be rather noisy when the fuel level is low. Keep it from being too low. You'll always hear a "whirrr" when turning the key on, that's a a good thing, if you don't hear the whirr, ...problems are afoot.

There's a rubber holder that it mounts into that can harden with age and increase the noise.

And if a fuel hose is loose in the tank it will be double or triple as noisy.

Old known issue, I have proven that it is true based on personal experience.

As others have said, it's normal. Mine gets noisy when I've done a few miles after the warning light.

Hi Chaps; i'm also having noise problems with fuel pump which seems like a loud screeching even with a full tank of fuel (i think it probably sounds worse sat on bike). I tried to fix with draining tank putting fresh fuel and filter in but still have the problem. Any other thoughts and or step by step diognostic checks i could do?

ps. Noise only kicks in after a few miles and the bike is running sweet as anything despite noise.

Cheers Very Happy
Andy

Andy - if it's screeching - and you're sure it's the pump, you might want to start looking for a replacement...

Try some fuel system cleaner. Can't hurt.

i've already put a couple of measures through the tank but will continue and use the bottle up; as you say worth a try.

bike doesn't seem upset by noise; it just bugs me!

Mine was doing a similar thing when I bought it. Not a screech but a very loud, high-pitched whine that would start up shortly after starting the bike. I took it back to the dealer. They thought it was the pump but that didn't fix it. Eventually they replaced the rubber and plastic mounting assembly in the tank and did some hose re-routing, also in the tank. Now it's like all the others - it only starts to whine when it gets on to reserve. I don't think they did anything else.

thanks mtnroads; sounds very similar (on reflection mine is also a loud whining rather than screech) I'll look into that further and see if we can get sorted.

Cheers

Mine did it after a tank swap so +1 on the "fiddle with hoses and check rubbers"

Still only partially recovered from my trip, but have been looking at the '96 parts bike a little more closely, and specifically at the fuel tank from which the pump and filter were removed. My question is this: is that a possible leak point if the bike sat for a long while (this is a 96 with only 17 K on it)? Took a closer look at the hole at the bottom of the tank where the pump would mount, and it looks like there's a lot of residue; that would match up with the traces of residue below the tank on the motor body.

Just trying to figure out what I've got. apologies if this is a hijack.

Yes, that's typically where tank leaks develop.

Thanks, Duck.

Oddly enough, that's good news--I'm trying to figure out why PO2 did what he did, and that fits the pattern I'm seeing.
