|
|
Yet again I have turned to the best BMW forum on the Net for advice on my 1998 K1100LT.
I have a problem with the movement of the upper fork cross brace which moves up affecting the steering/braking.
The fine threaded nut & screw that fastens through the Upper fork cross brace into the knurled nut/tapered roller bearing keeps coming undone.
I have obviously tried tightening it with huge spanners, hitting it tight with a drift and using threadlock.
But after about 70 miles it comes undone again.
Have any of you gurus any ideas on how to keep it done up?
As usual, thanks in advance. _________________ "Lovely stuff" ...Not my words Michael... the words of Shakin' Stevens. |

Sounds very odd. In your shoes, I would mark the nuts with correction fluid. To see which one moves first. When you tighten / adjust them, do you loosen the clamps at the top of the forks? Do a search on here for the diagram for the special tool for adjustment. It IIRC has to be done in a certain order.

Sounds strange.
the inner bplt locks the knurled ring to the stem which comes up from the bottom yoke when you've adusted the bearing to move smoothly. it's fixed with a 19mm socket. the nut secures the top yoke to the knurled ring and is fixed with a 32mm socket. both are tightened to a significant torque so there is no understandable way the nut and/or then the bolt should come loose. i just readjusted mine and the most troublesome bit was aligning the top yoke to the bottom one; the bearing had to be adjusted first and locked with the bolt then the top yoke pulled down gently with the "32 mm nut" then the forks set level to the top yoke and both yokes tightened to torque and then the NUT torqued and then the top yoke fork bolts loosened in case the yoke had pulled down a bit and retorqued. but no way i can see how anything can come loose in a hurry after all that.
Any help?
Tony. |

That's what I was trying to say, in my own clumsy way. _________________ Regards Tim,

Cheers for the help lads,
I think I need to undo the 4 bolts that bolt the upper fork cross brace onto the fork then tighten this fine threaded nut & screw up and adjust the bearing to move smoothly.
The last thing to do is tighten back up the 4 bolts on the forks.
What doesnt help is the state of the roads .... a bloody disgrace. _________________ "Lovely stuff" ...Not my words Michael... the words of Shakin' Stevens. |
