Any problem with using 10-40 oil in the engine of a 93 K1100RS in Virginia?

The recommended temp range in the owners manual for 10-40 stops at about 68F.

It burned it, used it, spit it out - something... It went through too much of it. I suspect my K wasn't "broken in" right. It would go through a quart of synth in a thousand miles. Yeah - I know that's within spec - it just seemed excessive to me. The upside was I didn't have to think about changing the oil. The downside was that synth costs too much.

The K seems to like Actevo OK.

I use regular old Castrol 20-50 dino oil here in Iowa.

Like Jim, synthetic is just too expensive yet, and hard to find(here anyway) for as much as it was using.

I found the same with the synth - used regular Castrol, now using Activo(or however you spell it) I went through the 'wasn't run in properly' also.
So I gave it a good run in. Still uses oil though. 60,000 miles just.

When I lived in NOVA I used 20w50 in the spring/summer and changed to 10w40 in the Fall/winter. I rode year round so it worked well usually with the mileage. I still do the same here in PA.

the issues with 10-40 is the size of molcules. the oil passages in the block is what is critical.. in hotter climates you want a thicker oil.. in colder climates you want a thinner spread... and remember the first number is the critical one. most engine damage ( rings bearings etc ) is caused at startup.. oil for the correct ambient temp will provide the best protection because it is what will flow quickly. . after warm up the later number is more for oils ability to withstand the heat and act a secondary colling system..

I run 20-50w amsoil from march to dec .. if i could ride in the colder months it would be 15-40w .. i would go 5w-30 if the temps went below 25 F..
